Are carp the future?

Talking to someone on another forum and he suggested that carp are the future for fly fisheries.

They are cheaper to produce than trout.

They fight harder than trout.

They live much longer than trout.

They will tolerate less than perfect water conditions.

When they grow too big for comfortable fly fishing they can be sold on to coarse fisheries to fund replacements.

It would be interesting to spice up a few put and take trout fisheries with a few carp. It could catch on.

I wonder how long it would be before Korda or Palletrax come out with some indispensable flys :P

A brilliant idea if it keeps the noddies away from the rivers!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

My most successful fly, tied with a tungsten bead and fished deep and slow.

I do wonder how long carp would remain catchable on a pressured, fly-only catch and release water - I don't think carp are as dumb as rainbows, and are very much longer lived.

A couple of trout-waters I fish have carp in there.

They usually swim up for a look at what I'm up to, in a slow, friendly, howdy sort of way.

As far as I know they are never caught.

On the other hand, rudd in the same waters have provided some great entertainment on a 3wt.

Nearby is an overstocked carp pond where the carp may be more obliging on the fly.

That has kind of put me off going there to try for the rudd.

There are carp in a water I fish, and they are occasionally caught on the fly. The water closes as a trout fishery from late June to mid October, and opens for coarse fishing for that period. There are some quite big carp in there;

Any one of those on a fly rod would be guaranteed to put a smile on your face

Yeah, but I don't think my priest is up to dispatching one... :whistling:

(Actually, I usually fish C&R even for the rainbows, I don't think Dan would take kindly to me coshing one of his carp!)
