I was wondering does any one fish lures stationery just lying on the lake/river bed?

 

I don't know why it came in to my head but the other day I was thinking that it's been ages since I have done any trout fishing but as a child it was my main fishing target and one of my family friends who taught me a lot about fishing used to allow his lure usualy a Toby or Mepps to settle on the river bed and fish it like a static dead bait and he used to catch Pike, Trout, Perch & Salmon on the method.

 

I even had a few Perch on the method myself ,but as a kid I never had the patience to just wait it out. It's much more fun to thrash the water and retrieve the lures then fish them static. Oddly I never tried the method as an adult. I seem to remember some Matt Hayes program where he was fishing for Zander, I think it was Holland but I am not sure and I think they talked about having a sleeper rod with a jig lying on the deck. So maybe it is used more then I think.

 

I know plenty of AN members have really got in to lure fishing and drop shoting but does any one just cast out and let them lie on the bottom? Some plastic shads look so real these days would fish pick them up? But thinking back my lures would have been very basic bits of metal from Argos or Woolworths and Perch picked them up.

Over the years I've had the occasional take on a lure I wasn't moving - usually when I backlashed a baitcaster and was trying to clear it. I have never been sure the lure wasn't moving a bit though from current or some such.

 

I have caught some nice fish on surface lures by casting to a likely spot and leaving the lure alone for the time needed to smoke a fag then giving it a small twitch, waiting again, and repeating that process over and over for a half hour or more.

Very good point Newt as the fish where all from rivers and with light lures and so I guess there could still have been some movement from the current.

I've never had a fish take a lure static off the bottom. I've caught plenty of trout on nymphs like buzzers fished 'static' but in reality they are always moving - its just that I'm not putting any movement into them. A gentle breeze or slight undertow moves them more than you'd think.

 

It's the same story with the zander. We've had quite a lot now on soft plastics held 'static' just off bottom, fishing vertically under the boat (the same thing mr hayes was doing on that programme), but again the boat is always moving and putting gentle movements into the lure. We found the slower the better for zander btw, anything over about 0.5mph was too quick and it was ignored.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

I took a pike on a static lure for the first time last year. ( edit...no I took one about 3 years ago. see later post in this thread, this is making me think)My son hooked up and I lay down my rod to chin it out for him, it's our standard operating proceedure, his took more getting to the boat than imagoned and I noticed out of the corner of my eye my rod bending over and about to go into the lake. The lure I had on was a small rapala x rap. It may have been given some movement by the drift of the boat, but it didn't look like it.

 

Shakespeare released a range of lures in the 70s, and gave instructions as to how best fish then on the packaging, on the the 'crazy critter', a surface lure with a propeller at each end we were advised to cast out and wait a while before starting the retrieve. I sometimes still do this with top lures ( my very favourite way of fishing BTW), and havin' a fag while waitin' ooooh those were the days!

I used to have a pet pike. Mostly, it would only take dead fish while they were sinking, but now and then it would follow them to the bottom and stare at them for some time before finally either rejecting or eating. Could be a relevant bit of behaviour.

You will have many Blank sessions , If you fish a lure like that

i can assure you any wild river fish i take on any of my lures would NEVER touch them on the bottom

I have fished in FISH FARMS before stuffed with rainbows , who would eat anything But if my lure

made it to the river bed They would NEVER touch it in a Million years

the lure is all about movement , Vibration & flash

Sorry i just dont buy this method

Also what a boring way to fish :angry:

It's true that it would be boring (but then again I find watching dead bait rods very boring most of the time), but I would never say never with the certainty you do. I took a pike about 3 years ago after stopping the retrieve of a jerkbait to answer my mobile, the fish may have been following the lure, but it was very still and on the bottom and had been for a couple of minutes at least when it was picked up.

Say for instance , I am spinning for salmon & i do any UnNatural

move the fish will instantly stop following the lure

more so if it lies on the bottom

The fish is interested in the movement & vibration

not a lump of metal , plastic or wood lying on the river bed :rolleyes:

I am not pushing it as a good method and making any claims that it will improve your catches but I am curious if any one does it as the chap who does it catches well. He does not turn up cast in and leave the lure all day but wonders up and down the river working lures but will stop from time to time and leave the lure on the river bed while having a break and does get takes. As a kid I thought this was normal to fish lures in such a way. Once I got older and was taught how to fish the correct way :rolleyes: I now find it odd.

 

But nothing wrong with not following perceived wisdom.
