How do you feel about using dead and livebaits?

But sadly I doubt that will be! Even sadder (IMO) though is it will most likely be "fellow" anglers who deprive me of this choice and not the "anti's" or Joe Public :(

Agreed.

That is certainly true. You only have to look around at club rules to see that.

I did a couple of days pheasant shooting with work last season. On the first day half the guest had never shot a thing before in their lives and before the start there was a few comments that they weren't to keen on killing things. I think I spent most of the 2 days ringing the necks of runners as they didn't have the guts for it. Funny thing is they all came for the second day and are coming again this year.

When topics like this one come up, I tend to be left thinking we live in a society full of hypocritical wimps that should stick to or take up golf and mow the grass by eating it. :)

Spot on Brian.

Angling is full of hypocrisy. You only have to listen to some going on about fish welfare, then fishing artificially over stocked waters.

"Don't kill fish", but it's OK to kill otters etc, (as long as someone else does the killing).

The 'mainstream' has become so artificial that it bears more resemblance to a computer game than a field sport.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I don't like livebaiting, in the same way that I don't like killing trout.

But, I do like catching big perch, and I do like eating trout, and sometimes my likes outweigh my dislikes.

Angling Trust

Apart from its very blinkered head in the sand view of where escapes come from...... Yes i would say thats not bad and probably one of if not the best thing Ive read from the Angling Trust. :)

I am not that bothered about using live baits or killing fish for bait, I did used to have an odd preference for which fish to use for baits. I never think twice about using Roach, Dace, Skimmers, Chub but oddly have never been to keen on using Perch until last winter when all I could catch for a few weekends where Perch and so I soon got over that little hang up :D I don't think now I would care much what I used for bait.

If we are willing to hook a fish in the mouth, then its seems a little odd to get to precious about using them for bait and worrying about where the hooks go in.

I do like the anglers who live bait but say they only use singles for lip hooking them, like that some how makes a difference. The only reason to do that is for better presentation and not for "fish welfare"

Stephen

Thanks for the replies, made a very interesting read. Too many to reply to but it's given me food for thought, especially that I can buy deads and don't have to do despatch of them myself (By the way how to they do this, I didnt think you could transport fish legally, are the fish bred to be bait?) although if i'm going to use them maybe I should man up (for want of a better phrase) and do it myself :g:

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

There are laws against transferring live fish from one water to another. There are laws on the size and what species you can take dead or alive...... But I don't know of any laws against transporting fish dead or alive. Yet.
