Effects of steroid treatment

Hi

I was wondering if anyone had been on longish term treatment with cortico steroids and can give me some advice from actual experience.

I have just about lost the use of my left arm and have been started on high dose Prednisolone 50Mg / day. The side effects are pretty horrendous.

I am having quite severe mood swings, depression, insomnia and an inability to concentrate or follow a train of thought.

My diabetes is all over the place with blood sugars 4 times normal.

I have discussed these with my Dr and I know the theory.

What I would like to do is speak to someone who has actually had this type of therapy. How did it work? Did the side effects resolve? How long did it take?

I understand that effects will be different in different people but it would be useful to talk to someone with actual rather than theoretical experience.

If you don't want to discuss on a public forum then please PM me

Cheers

Dave

I was on a similar does of Prednisolone 50Mg when I suffered an acute attack of Gout NSAID's did nothing to shift it but the steroids got rid of it within a week. However I can confirm I suffered all of the side effects you mentioned particularly the last one, an inability to concentrate or follow a train of thought.

Probably worth it as the pain of Gout is excruciating.

After a certain age, if you don't wake up aching in every joint, you are probably dead.

Hi Tony

Thanks for the reply.

I know what you mean about the gout, I have suffered (correct word) with it for around 25 years. It runs in my Mothers side of the family. Luckily I can control it with NSAIDS if I catch an attack early.

Did the side effects of the steroids wear off pretty quickly once you stopped taking them? It looks like I will be on them for a bit longer than a week.

Yes the symptoms wore off quickly, my problem was that although the Gout was relieved by the steroids I was on such a high does I had to gradually reduce the intake rather than abruptly stop the tablets and as such I was on fairly high dose for over a month. Not long after I suffered a recurrent attack of Gout and had to start all over again and as such i was on the bloody things for nigh on three months.

thankfully taking the steroids allowed the alluprinol to kick in and i have not had a major attack since.

Well Tony

What is the saying about talking up a storm?

I am sitting here at 0400 trying to take my mind off my first bad attack of gout in years.

How the hell do you get an attack of gout when you are on steroids? They are supposed to stop it.

To cap it all off I now have it in both feet, before it was only one.

BTW if anyone mentions rich food or too much Port I will personally come around to their house, rip their arm off and beat them to death with the soggy end

As I have been able to control attacks with NSAIDS in the past I have avoided starting on Alopeurinol, ah well, back to the medic in the morning (later this one) to see what he says.

I am sure it will be "keep taking the tablets" but at the moment it hurts like a ************

Sportsman,

Among her other conditions my grandmother suffered from gout.

She took baking soda 4 or 5 times a day (I don't remember how much). Circa 1947)

Ever tried that?

Phone

Hi Phone

I can't say that I have tried baking soda.

My Grandfather had gout at around that time so maybe he did although according to my Mother he preferred alcohol ;)

I find that modern anti-inflammatory drugs work much better, just not today :)
