got a hook stuck in my finger

was out yesterday for a wee while and as i was applying some force to tighten my hook knot it slipped off my zipper and right in to my index finger past the barb. was a size 14 korum s3 and surprised it didnt hurt i just kinda looked at it in disbelief as there was no pain.

 

anyhow the hook wasnt rusty but its been used on a few different waters and fish so is there anything i should look out for. i applied anti bacterial hand wash & plaster and left it at that.

Is your Tetanus injection still up to date? Sounds like you done all the right things.

eh. 1990 something was the last time :huh:

 

I think you are supposed to get a booster every 10 years or so. Well worth having for anglers with all the cuts and scratch's we can get and chance of infection. It might be worth booking a jab with your GP.

It's a funny old thing when you get a hook stuck in you. I got a no4 stuck well in to my forearm, and I was also surprised that there was almost no pain! I ended up gripping the little bit of shank still showing with a pair of pliers and twisted it so the point came out, and then gripped this with pliers and pulled the hook free. Almost no blood, no pain..just a slight ache, and 2 neat holes, 1 where it went in, and 1 where it came out.

 

Next day I had a job to pinpoint where it had gone in.

 

I began to wonder if I am really alive :)

One of my mates and mine every session comments goes something like this:

" Robyn....these hooks are sharp!"

Each and every time I go fishing I "test" a hook or two by accidentally stabbing myself somewhere with one.

I've never gone deep though. Like any puncture wound though you need to be careful, the entry wound will close quickly, but the deep wound will not. If it becomes infected you will notice it turning red and swelling slightly.

With a deep stab wound (of this size) its worth gently squeezing it every 8 hours or so for the first couple of days just to be sure you flush any infection etc. not hard, just gently.

I guess it is an old remedy. I thought everyone carried a tube of Ichthammol Ointment.

 

My earliest recollection is as a salve for cow udder puncture wounds. But its use by the "klutzzy" fisherman is ledgondary.

 

Take the advice of an old man - "Icky" ointment and a current tetanus shot will keep you fit as a fiddle.

PS May I also suggest you "NOT DO THAT" in the first place. Although, I used to consider 3 times a year a good season.

i found that really odd. when i pulled it out i was expecting blood but none at all, not even a drop. even showed it to my mate i found it so weird. as soon as i squeezed it a little it started but only a little :blink:

 

made me wonder about the fish feel pain debate.
