I've also often heard attempts to label Eurosceptics as racists, seems a fairly effective (if dishonourable) way of shutting down debate.

depends on individual incidents or comments as to whether a person can be called racist or not.

Just having a strongly held opinion on immigration is not reason to be labelled so.

I also hear the man described as "A pocket Nazi" today,...

Steve,

Curious, what do you think is the common definition of "Eurosceptics" - - - some eurosceptics seek a different form of European Union whilst some seek the withdrawal of their own country from the EU and yet others seek the complete dissolution of the EU.

I've not seen it used as a "racist" remark? I always thought it was a British word coined to keep the Euro currency out of the UK?

Like you say Phone, different "grades" of Eurosceptics, it appears to cause more heated argument than any other subject in Britain.

Loved this bit of your post.....

"Thought it was a British word coined to keep the Euro currency out of the UK?"

I have never heard anybody in Continental Europe have a desire to have them in it!

Phone,

I would describe a Eurosceptic as someone who is unhappy with the current state or future direction of "The European Project". That may be an unhappiness with the principle or the implementation or the consequences, or all three.

As to what the European Project is, that also depends who you ask - broadly, an increasing social, legal and economic convergence across a growing number of countries, which some enthusiasts would like to result eventually in a single federal European state.

Personally, I think it's essentially a way of building a political empire by using the transfer of wealth from existing members to bribe new members into ceding their sovereignty. I think the problem it mostly addresses is superpower envy amongst the European political elite, who feel a little light in the trouser department when they stand next to the heads of state of the US or China at the G8 urinals.

Steve,

I confess, I had to look up "UKIP".

I don't know squat about them.

no probs, here's one from a while ago regarding euro sceptics,

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..
