Telescopic Rod

Hi Folks,

What's the best current telescopic rod with a 1.25lbs test curve?

Any suggestions?

My "best" telescopic rod went in the dustbin many years ago, as soon as multipiece rods became available.

My advice would be not to waste your money - a search of past threads on telescopics will reveal what is wrong with them - the chief disadvantage being that the gap between the tip ring and the next ring is too great - something inherent in the very nature of telescopics. Too great a gap leads to line-wrap around the rod-tip. I used to tape an extra ring in the space, a real pain every time you went fishing as you had to take it off again when packing up.

Their only advantage was ease of air travel - but as soon as multipiece rods (say 4 to 5 joints for a ten-foot rod) came on the market, the tele became obsolete.

What sort of fishing are you thinking of ?

I'm looking for a half decent rod, about 11' or 12' long, that I can carry easily in a large rucksack along with a small Vango tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat etc.

My plan for the beginning of next season (or in the Summer) is to disappear, on foot for a few days or longer, and tackle some previously unexplored & unfished sections of my local River.

I need the rod to handle mainlines from 3lbs to 7-8lbs for catching large Dace/Roach up to double figure Barbel etc, and figure that 1.25lbs test curve would be ideal.

The John Wilson travel Avon quiver would be just the ticket it is a multipiece though and not a telescopic

Good choice Alan, or there is the Shakespeare Mach 1 XT 13 foot match, 5 piece (breaks down to 84 cm - ie about 2' 10")

Cheap and cheerful, and I saw it here

Worth a look, although I must say I have never used a "match" travel rod - most of my light travel rods are Shimano spinners or similar of about 9' or so, and I quite happily use them for spinning, legering, slider float fishing, free lining, trotting, stret pegging or whatever seems the going method - travelling to far-away places soon teaches you versatility. :)

Intrigued by this "unexplored and unfished river" - sounds like the Nile ! :):)

I have a couple of the wychwood Rouge carp telescopics for stealth fishing and the have a floating ring on the top section below the tip ring and found them excellent for the money.....up there with the old DAM black panther pike telescopics imo ....much heavier than what you need though

shakespeare make a decent telescopic travel rod; but as others have said you can buy some absolutely awesome 5 or 6 piece travel rods that will far outshine most telescopics. Even the dragoncarp Avanti travel rods are a superb piece of kit; and you can pick them up for £20!!

personally I have an Avanti 12' travel rod (6 piece); and two shimano tribal stc travel rods. the shimano's are 2.75 but don't act anything like a rod that stiff in general use; they really are very tactile in use; they are a superb quality rod but you pay the price for them!

the Shakespeare rods are from the Odyssey range:

and if you hunt around you can get them in 8,9,10 or 11 foot versions

bought one for my father and he loves it; and my fishing buddy has used one for several years now regularly catching carp and trotting on rivers inc hooking into some barbel if I recall.
