It could have died near the boat. It does happen.

"Of course, in this era of billfish conservation, there are many critics of the killing of such a magnificent creature. The anglers did not believe, however, that it would have survived after such a wearying deep-water struggle. They thought that releasing the billfish would have just been feeding the sharks."...from here

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

If you are fishing for a creature that you are pretty certain is going to die as a result, why fish for it?

I'm sorry, but I just don't see the point of it.

Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional :-)

I dare say that it is possible they weren't pretty certain of the creature's possible demise before catching it...Or even of catching a fish of that size at all...I doubt if any of it was wasted and, fishing as a source of food is arguably more ethically correct than fishing for sport.

I'm sure I'm not alone in having fish go belly up on me after I've fought them to the bank...not deliberate but it does happen.

I'm sure we all have, but how many of them have been 1000lb+ fish?

None for me but, with the largest blue marlin recorded at 2,433lb that's equivalent to a 9oz dace or a 5lb chub! Look at the commercial landings for Hawaii alone here...I've got no problem with it. If the fish was likely to die and the meat is used then why not?
