Bass Wedges

Hi,

I've just bought a selection of feathers, rigs and float set-ups for pier fishing, and I'm pretty sure I know how to set all of those up.

The bloke in the shop also recommended a bass wedge, which I bought. Looks like this:

Have looked on-line to try and find out what I need to set the bass wedge up on a line, but no joy (presume it's such a beginner / obvious question no-one else asks it! ).

Do you literally just tie the bass wedge onto the end of the fishing line and that's it? No other weights or anthing?

Is a halfblood knot okay to do this?

(I realise this isn't really the right time of year to fish for bass with a wedge in the UK - just want to know for Mayish onwards!).

Cheers,

Quite a handy lure those wedges. I don't use a Blood knot at all, it's been proven to be too weak. The only knots I use are a Uni knot or a Palamor knot. Have a look at this site to see how to tie them, it's animated and easy to follow.

Yes, these wedges are tied onto the end of the line, and very effective they are too. I connect them to a Duolock snap so that I can easily change to a lighter or heavier lure according to the state of the tide and the depth I want to fish.

One tip I can give you is that if you're feathering for mackeral is to replace the weight with a wedge. You may be pleasantly surprised and hook a bass that's hanging out under the mackeral!

I'd add that I'm a perch and pike fanatic who's done a bit of sea fishing. However there's a lot of crossovers between the branches of the sport.

Sam,

Did they tell you how to "work" the wedge? Over here that lure is a steady medium speed retrieve takes 95% of the fish without further complication.

Not sure in the UK.

Edit: someone(?) I forget, is this lure prone to line twist?

Thanks for all replies - very useful.

Steve Burke - thanks in particular for the feathering tip re: using the wedge instead of a weight - will give that a try.

Phone - no info was given on technique (it was a very last minute additional purchase) but I have since read that a simple, steady retrieve is more effective than attempting anything more complex (simple suits me fine!).
