I caught my first Barbel ever at Fishers Green on the River Lea this evening at 7 pounds 2oz. I am really pleased, as this is my first season on the green and only the second time I have fished the venue. I would like to thank all the other members I have met who have given me advice on bait and swim choice. I couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks also to the guys at Harlow Angling Centre for all their advice on tackle. Thanks to RMC for maintaining the venue in such top order. I will be back to try for a double.

Congratulations Peter. I've been fishing stretches of the upper Lea near Welwyn Garden City for two years for barbel and haven't had one over 6½!!

Hi Peter, Congratulations on your first barbel, but slow down a bit. Most of us waited years between our first barbel and our first double (over 20 in my case). Doubles are lovely to catch but please, don't set your sights too high and risk severe dissapointment. Just be pleased to catch a barbel, any barbel!

Having said that I am still pleased for you that you have had your appetite for barbel whetted, it can be addictive, but such great fun.

Well done Peter,I caught my first Barbel on the river Thames at wallingford in 1965,never had one since. :D:D:D

Fishing seems to be my favorite form of loafing.

 

"Even a bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work."

 

I know the joy of fishes in the river through my own joy, as I go walking along the same river.

 

What do you think if the float does not dip, try again I think.

Nice one Peter, it's probably something you'll never forget, and as Chris Yates said "it's the only time you will ever catch your first barbel"

 

I caught my first barbel just a little upstream from there in 1978, 3lb 12oz. I can still remember just about every detail of the event as though it were yesterday.

 

My first double came from the same venue in 1984, a very big fish from there in those days.
