Thanks for resurrecting this post Judy I enjoyed reading it for the first time.

Saved by the bell was shown in another posting (sharsam?) It relates to people being buried alive (by accident) so the practice of burying a person with a cord round his wrist leading up to a bell above ground was adopted. Anyone ringing was literally "saved by the bell!)
