More computer help please

Most of our computer problems are now sorted. However, 2 remain.

The first is a long-standing one which is more of a nuisance than a problem. Many times a day we get an RNAAPP illegal operation message coming up. It often takes umpteen clicks to close but thereafter everything appears at least to run smoothly. It says it's a KERNAL32 problem if that helps.

I suspect the other problem might be a more serious one. Several times in the last week the main hard drive has just whirred as though it's a gramophone needle caught in an LP. Pressing reset and restarting the computer seems to solve the problem. We've also run ScanDisk each time on rebooting, and I think Peggy did a routine Defrag.

If it makes any difference we're running Windows 98 on a Pentium II/266. We've 2 hard drives, and it appears that it's the big C drive that has the problem.

Stuck gramaphone record type noises from the machine are not good - it smacks of impending hardware failure. In 'real person speak' instead of 'geek speak' - it means one of your hard disks could very easily be about to fail. If you're right and it's the disk that the C: drive is on, this is where your OS (operating system - in your case Win98) is usually installed...

Basically, back up everything you want to keep very regularly and wait for it to fail completely. When it does... change the disk, reinstall your OS and restore your data from the backups. You can preempt the failure by replacing the disk that's likely to be faulty and replace it now. This has the advantage of meaning you will lose nothing in terms of your data or the setup you have now.

Hard disks are relatively cheap - a 40GB disk will probably cost between £75 and £125 - don't quote me on this though as it's a very round figure.

Cheers,

Adz.

This advice is some I wish I had known of earlier. ( like before mine self-destructed!)

Back up everything you value, and go out to buy a new HDD! They are now about half the price I had to pay!

Thanks, fellas1

The annoying thing is that the hard drive is a replacement one we bought last year and I think therefore only just out of its guarantee period!

Still could (and likely is) the Hd getting ready to trash itself.

RNAAPP - you probably need to remove your networking and reinstall. Make sure you are using the latest version of DUN (dial up networking). 1.4 is the version I think but not positive.

I suggest booting to safe mode, removing networking and any networking devices (modem, whatever) from device manager.

Then physically remove the hardware and start back up.

Then shut down, reinstall the hardware, and set everything back up again.

Cheers, Newt.

I don't know how to do all these things but my brother-in-law will for sure.

Doesn't sound like the fan I'm afraid as the computer locks up. :(

I can't find the documents at the moment, but I seem to recall IBM hard drives are guaranteed for 3 years.

All's OK at present but we'll be doing a lot of backing up in the next few days on the new CD rewriter!
