Pike on frogs?

Im quite intrested, has anyone caught anything on these frog lures. They look wierd to me, but has anyone caught using them?

Hi,

 

I've used frog lures for the first time this season, I have been using spro bronze eye hollow body frogs and found that although the hook up ratio isn't great (maybe 50% at best) they are great fun, it amazin seeing pike launch themselves out lily pads or watching them torpedo across the surface at the lure.

 

Make sure you use strong line as you might be fishing close to lily pads and weed and need strong line to hold the fish, use a long supple wire trace, long because pike quite often miss the lure and you risk them cutting the line if you have a short trace and a supple trace because they will let go of the frog before you can set the hooks if the trace is too inflexible.

 

When you get a bite, don't strike straight away.... This will sometimes result in the lure coming flying back a you :-). Wind down until you feel the fish and then if you feel it strike straight away and hard. If you don't feel it keep twitching the lure as the pike quite often hit the lure and then turn and properly take it.

Good luck if you give it a go, if you do then you better be quick, I think you will start to struggle with frog lures as we move into Autumn.

"Frog lures" covers a wide range including flies, hollow body silicone, soft plastic frog imitations (as per Phone's picture), prop baits, and various hard lures - and I'm sure several other types that don't spring to mid at the moment.

I have to say that I pretty much gave up on the hollow lures a few years ago because they are terrible for casting and while I'm sure they're great for American bass, pike's teeth tend to penetrate the soft body of the lure and this prevents the energy of the strile being transmitted to the hook points - soo they spit them back at you a lot.

Is there a better option ?

Heddon make a lure called the "Moss Boss" which casts like a bullet, can be fished slowly on the surface through the thickest of vegetation and which sinks slowly allowing it to be twitched in the fish's face if there's a hole in the weeds.

Oh yes and the hookup ratio is way better than any hollow rubber frog out there.

Ive often wondered if pike go for frog lures because they think they are frogs or purely strike at the movement.

The shallow end of the res I fish gets full of frogs at spawning time. I know theres pike there cos ive had a few but never seen them after the easy meal of frods in the margins.

I much prefer to use poppers, I think Pike react well to all the commotion and noise. Not so great for fishing in to weed but I feel that a frog imatation popper will outfish the soft plastics if weed etc allow it to he used.

Top-Water Using a Spook

Top-Water fishing for Northern Pike with a Hedon Spook is an art form that seems to have been lost and needs to be carried on to the younger generation. There is no fishing method for Pike that is more exciting than working the surface with a Spook and getting those Monster Pike splashing at the surface. Over the years I have seen people try to use a Spook, since it is the most exciting Pike fishing method known. Since I have not seen anyone execpt a few oldtimers use a Spook sin I think it's time you whippersnappers get back into them. Here's what Heddon says:

 

 

1st) You have to cast your Spook out. The perfect spot to cast a Spook is over-top a thick weed bed that is just under the surface, in between patches of lily pads or along side Bulrushes. The whole purpose is to be able to fish in places that are not practical for other lures.

2nd) Once your Spook hits the surface, don't start reeling in yet. Give it a couple of yanks so it makes splashes on the surface like a wounded frog or bird. Many times the Pike will hit the Spook before you start reeling in.

 

3rd) This is the tricky part. You have to hold your rod up as high as you can and pull the line tight so your fishing line is not in the water or even touching the surface. Your line has to be out of the water or the Spook will not make the proper motion when you reel it in.

Start to reel in slowly at a constant speed. While reeling in you have to jerk your rod every second. When you jerk your rod, the Spook will slide to one side. When you jerk it again, it should slide to the other side in a crisscrossing motion. You have to get a rhythm going. As you are reeling in, your Spook splashes from side-to side and this drives the Pike crazy.

 

The number ONE night time topwater lure is still the Jitterbug.

 

The overall number one lures bottom and midwater are the Red-&-White Daredevil and the Yellow 5-of-Diamonds Daredevil. You use the red in clear water and the yellow in murky water.

Thanks phone, that's very interesting. While we are talking about surface lure/techniques, do you know if this would be any good for Snook? Going to Mexico in a few months and planing to fish for Snook and small Tarpon.

 

I have a few of these lures but have only fished them in open saltwater but looks promising for mangrove surface fishing. My default is always to fish something that kicks up a lot of water, but I can see how the action worked back from cover would be attractive to predators.
