Finally Met Newt Vail

Newt and I have been emailing each other and meeting on forums for over 15 years. We finally met last night. Newt and his wife Bobbie came back to where he grew up as a kid for his 50'th high school reunion this weekend. Just goes to show you if you stay on the computer long enough you'll eventually get to meet people that you've chatted with for years. It was a great experiance for my wife and I to personally meet Newt and his wife Bobbie. Making friends and eventually meeting them is what this and other forums are really about. The extra bonus is all the knowledge that is shared among friends here.

We had a great time with you and your wife Jesse - well worth the drive to Memphis.

A few of us had the pleasure of meeting Newt and his late wife Jan at the AN Fish-in at Wingham in 2006 (was it that long ago!), and they stayed with us for a couple of days.

Newt in person is even nicer than on the Forum. So if you get a chance to meet him, grab it!

Peggy and I are still hoping to make a return visit, and one of these days we will make it.

The reunion was great fun. I hadn't seen most of these people since we finished high school (grade 12 so 17-18 years old) in 1963. About 10 of the graduates had died, some had dropped out of sight, and some couldn't make the trip. We drove about 1000 miles and some came from further away than that. I think only 3 or 4 still lived in the town of about 4200 people. I think there were 4 or 5 I would have recognized without them introducing themselves.

Here are then & now photos. I'm in the top row, 2nd from the left, in both photos but that was purely by accident.

Our school mascot, for reasons no one can remember, is the porcupine.

Yup. We don't have hedgehogs and as far as I know, you don't have porcupines but they do look quite a bit alike.
