there is an audio recorder in windows, exactly where paul says it is! just use a line out of your tapeplayer, to the line in of your sound card.

Thanks for the advice guys :)

Presumably I need a lead that goes from the tape player to the microphone input?

Leon - try a free program called CDex. I use it for all my MP3 encoding but I've also used it for the old vinyl - MP3 archiving process.

You can use it to record direct from an analog input and encode to MP3(which would be good for e-mailing) in one step.

You will need a lead to connect the tape deck to the line-in jack on your sound card, probably a 3.5mm. jack plug at either end.

dont use the mic input leon, if its a line level output from the tape deck, you need to use a line level input otherwise the signal will be overloaded coming into your pc and will distort.

easily done just connect your deck outs to your soundcards in and bobs your relation ,tape decks the same way ,i think the inbuilt sound recorder will only record 1min of sound but my creative audigy records unlimited and converts to wma or mp3 at a click

Oh! does that mean opening up the box and finding the sound card?

no you should have at least 3 connectors on an even basic card mic, line in and spkr connect the line out from your deck to the line in on your card ,if you cannot hear anything through your pc speakers ypur line in channel may be muted, open your software that controls the card and see if it is ,open your recording software ,select where it will record from(line in) start your tape and hopefully sound will issue forth, you can record any audio in this fashion even from the tv ,a scart socket with an audio out can be purchased cheaply and you will nead a converter to connect the twin (left right) audio cables to the type your card line in uses,if its a stereo SEPERATE tape deck (rather than a battery type mobile one) you will need the same converter to connect the 2"outs" to the single line in
