Couldn't believe this news item when I heard it yesterday, but for this bloke to stand there with this placard just turns my stomach....

Just how stupid can one person be? Did this nutball not think someone would recognise his rotten dial?

I'm confused here. If my math is accurate, a 38 y/o man who committed a crime in 1985 was 18 at the time.

From the story, I gather he was tried, convicted, and served his sentence which is supposed to balance the books.

Granted, 5-6 young men raping 2 younger girls is a nasty crime but the reactions I'm reading here seem a little OOT.

Did he, or did he not, lose a body part from a terriorist bomb explosion? If he did, how is that in any way connected with a 20 year old crime for which he has already been punished?

Newt,

I think the point Elton is making is how can a guy hold up a banner saying, "What about the victims?" When he himself has been a person who has caused people to be victims.

You're on another planet with this one Newt ;) we think just as Ian says.

.............. and what is a 'fair' sentence for the crime he was found guilty of committing? According to the Sun (a reliable newspaper of course) :

The blonde and brunette victims, both privately educated, were bundled into a dank garage at council flats in Brixton, South London.

They were stripped and raped a savage 45 times by the brutes. During their 1½-hour ordeal, a knife was held to the throat of one girl.

So if this is correct and he was found guilty as one of the four rapists, then in my view a fair sentence would be 25 years. Apparently he got just 7 years and I'll bet he was out before that was up!

Fair enough and I dont think he should put the lights on but he can still campaign for others at least that way he is actually helping someone else.

Dan

There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like an idiot!

I agree with Dan. This guy is in a "d*mned if he do, d*amned if he don't" situation. No one has to forgive the man for what he did (and what he did was way beyond horrific) but let him get on with his life.

So the legal system didn't give him enough years in prison to suit everyone and the prison system let him go after doing his time in jail. Is HE supposed to volunteer for extra years in prison? Who would? He CREATED victims in a past act but he's trying to HELP victims of the bombings. So, let him help (but maybe outside the public's eye). :(

However just his current cause*, he is part of an organisation and they must have been collectivly very silly or very nieve to think that his past wouldn't get dragged up with a statement like the one detailed in the article. How difficult would it have been to get someone with no record to make the statement on behalf of the group ?

*I personally don't see that much difference between being one of 20 people maimed by a terrorist bomb and being one bloke maimed by a nutter with a knife outside a chipshop and fail to see the logic of any special compensation.
