I dont know if they could be labeled as shortcomings as I have not really used them, but I suspected from previous expieriences of other peoples work on another forum that any "auto-fix" tool would have sharpening as part of its general process, so I looked for it.

Its true that if one knows the processses its possible to make almost any photograph, however dour look superb, but then we are back to that old chesnut of "how much is too much" or in my case "how little is enough" Its very easy to go overboard and I try not too, and I try to use as little as possible that will produce a good looking result. I do use sharpening, but only as a last resort and if I can get away with it..I wont use it at all.

I am in the middle of writing a tutorial on sharpening (I say in the middle because I have stopped for Christmas..:D) and I think a lot will become clearer when I have published it here, early January.

I have Elements 4 but as yet it remains unopened so have not used, I'll have to install it and have a look around, plus I recomended to a friend the same link I put here a few weeks back the very cheap Elements 5 on ebay, I'l have to go round to my mates and have a couple of hours play with it.

As for the 800 pixels wide and sharpening issue you mentioned, that is best to wait for the tut I'm writing as it would take a tutorial to explain if, what, maybe and etcetara...

A couple of lightning shots for the other night. My best effort to date, and still with the point and shoot. Was standing out the back in my undies, t shirt and umbrella some time around midnight.

Love the lightening shots HB, you've caught more than I ever have.:) Snatch that last shoreline shot is sweet too, even the horizon is level...:P;)

Wiggles and Den, they would make great subjects for "Out of the frame" treatments...
