educating poles

We have two poles who have started to work for us as bus drivers and over the last few weeks I have been given the task of traing them to drive on the 'wrong' side of the road. Both are married and nice guys and one used to go course fishing in Poland. so the invite was given out to him to go sea fishing last friday night.

The venue was to be cod pit in the taw/ torridge estuary and the target fish coddling and also the possibilty of picking up a bass.

We would travel down for just after high due to work commitments and Dillydangle and some mates would be there already. After failing to find the walkway in the dark and draging the poor pole over what seemed like a thousand sand dunes we turned up on the shore line some 20 mts away from the walkway and about 50 meters away from Dilly's party.

The weather was appauling, a strong head on wind was making casting very difficult but also keeping the tide up high and making the sea state very very rough. I don't think i've seen white horses like these before in the estaury. We duely set up one rod each, baited up and cast out.

It wasn't long before the first bass came in, a good condition bass of about 26-28 cm, it was quickly returned and the fishing continued. The pole was stood there looking bemused that we had put the bass back. A few mor bass came to the shore but were all just under size and returned. Then it was the poles turn to bring in a bass of about 28 cm. The look of delight on his face was great but when we returned it this look soon changed.

He realy could not belive that we let his catch go back to the sea. I tried to explane to him that there are limits on the size of the fish we catch in england. His reply:-

<_<In Poland bass is a 'pirate fish' ( his words) and any bass caught no matter how big can be taken for the table. These fish in Poland are a problem to sea and course fishing and are to be removed from the water if caught.

The traing goes on with this chap and he already understands that he can't take everything he may catch.

They are in the EU now so there licence is valid over here. we're the only country open for them to work in for long periods of time with out work permits at the moment but that is changing this year. As for the driving standards :o still must be better than there mls

The Lithuanian chap that we had working with us a few years ago now, said his license from home was good for a year in this country, then he had to take a test. He failed, but that didn't appear to stop him driving. He is now a Weymouth bus driver.

He did a spell in Afghanistan with the Russian Army. He hates Arabs!

Our newest Volvo lorry was written off by a Polish driver. He hit 7 other vehicles on the way from Weymouth to Milton Keynes. He kept taking his eyes off the road to look at the gear change!

Their job back home in Poland is kept alive for them for 6 months while come here to earn £s to send home. I think it used to be called 'redistribution of wealth' or 'international socialism' but I think it's something like 'globalization' nowadays.

One Polish couple in Weymouth saved £20,000 in the first year they were here.

I think they eat everything they catch in Poland.

They are quick learners of a 'system'. Some of the ones we had were soon able to clock in, then go off and work for somebody else all day and then come back and clock out again(with a few hours of overtime). We Brits working here, never thought of that!

i think you will find its not as simple as saying that any eu driving licence is valid in any other country.people CAN drive here in spain with a plastic style u.k licence, if they are residents here. BUT, they have to follow the spanish law and have medicals at certain intervals, to make this valid.

in the event of an accident, if it goes to court, they are automatically found against here, if they havent followed the law of the country.

i think the dvlc has a good website, it would surely tell you on there if its legal or not.

best wishes dave. :)

Do you think he is confusing our bass with the fresh water variety? I cant see how they are considered a nuisance?
