If you had asked me about licences last year I would have said I was completly against them and in any case they would be difficult to police. Now I'm not so sure.

The thing tahat has changed my mind was a trip I went on last year 'taking my daughter & partner fishing for the first time. One of the first stops for the weekend was Folkstone pier as I wanted easy fishing for a couple of beginers, you know catch a few makkies whilst I have a go for a Bass.

What I saw there absoulutly amazed me. The mackerel were so thick on the ground the water boiled with them and I saw anglers (a loose term) taking sackfull after sackful back to the carpark ,someone drove off with them and then they went back for more. Also included were Small bass and pollock about 9" long. After a while I went over to one of them and asked if he knew that taking undersized fish was illegal. He couldnt answer as he was eastern european and so were about 50% of anglers on a really busy dayOne of them who spoke english couldnt understand my attitude as he stated that in poland if you catch a fish you eat it regardless. This happened the next day on brighten pier so it was'nt a one off thing

I'm not saying a licence would have totally stopped them but at least it could be some sort of deterrant and a chance to examine the fish cought for sizes. It would be reasoably easy to police as the idiots seem to congregate on popular marks like piers

Incidently there is no trace of racialism here. I speak as I find regardless of nationality

been hearing a few reports of mullet being unnecesarily targeted on my local pier using mackerel feathers to foul hook them

:angry::angry::angry:

see http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17417

this is from the same pier that so called anglers were cartwheeling dogfish back into the sea because they are a pest w*****s.

whats are sport comeing too.?????

I thought I would post in my defence.

I started that topic on the other forum and just want to let you all know that I am new to sea angling.

I have had it upto here with all the crap about these mullet.

Everytime I go to the pier thats all I get, MULLET MULLET MULLET. :wallbash:

I dont even like the fish. I tried fishing for them on the night that they came in to try and catch one fairly. Not to foul hook them. I didnt hook any.

That is why I went back to using other rigs to catch other fish. Which I did successfuly.

There have been an influx of "Mullet Hunters" on the pier over the last 2 weeks. They are sad in my opinion, as stated by others, it is no sport. Just so they can brag, "ive caught 32 if those mullet" Great, lets have a party.

It was nice to see the shoal as the sea was alive with them. Someting I have never witnessed before.

Although it was not nice to see people bagging mullet of 2.5lb, thats far too small, from what I read, (and correct me if i am wrong). It takes approx 10 years for a mullet to reach that size. 4lb is the take home size, right?

So "Mullet Hunters" get a life.

As for me, I am continuing my search of Conger and Bass.

Thanks

First of all may i say welcome to the forum Dozza

You will find that there are people on here with some strong feelings on certain spiecies of fish in our waters.

I for one, don't have any preference towards a certain speices of fish but am concerned about the way fishing folk act. Cartwheeling doggies back into the sea because they are a pest and foul hooking mullet are not good acts for the fishing fraturnity.

All it take is for the local papers to get hold of this story and before you know it the pier will be closed to all anglers. It's happened before at Ilfracombe and will happen again if this kind of thing keeps happening.

Dillydangler and myself were there Sunday afternoon and there was one chap spinning feathers then. At this time of year he could be only after the mullet to be honest. We spoke to him about it in a round about way as not to cause offence but he continued on, although he agreed it was unsporting. We spoke about the lenght of time it takes these fish to grow to any size and after a while he changed over to other tactics.

I don't know if it was because we pointed out the facts about mullet to this guy, but if it was then hopefully he will pass on the information to the next people treating fish the same way.

Fishing is my hobby and i would like to keep it that way. It is my escape from the presurers of work. I don't want to be bogged down with licences, rule and regulations but can see it going that way.

This isn't a dig at you Dozza

Just trying to explain how some of us feel. :fishing1:

Hi mate,

Yes I should be there. Looking forward to it. I lived in Woolacombe for over 20 years, and guess what, never once fished the beach. Was always told it was no good for fish, obviously someone was lying to me.

Hope to catch some nice bass.

Cheers mate
