Using an Abu 506

strangley despite the catalogue specifically the 503 505 the match spool of the 501 fits the 503 but its difficult to see if there is a gap so i would steer clear of the 501 spool in a 506 just incase the line isnt laid properly etc

Thanks Chesters

I guy I work with has a collection of these so I will ask him to check if they fit each other.

I thought it was only the 501 and 506M that you could back wind with.

Also I have found it is smoother to hold back by either paying out the line from the reel with your left hand or following the float down on a fixed line (your finger trapping the line, then releasing the line at the end and sweeping the rod back up stream,re trapping the line and following down again. Not as smooth as a pin mind!

I much prefer my 501's for river waggler work where you dont need to hold back.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

I am an engineer and if they are hard to come by it would probably be easier to make my own. If anyone is interested give me a shout.

yes its a job to see how far the spool goes under the flyer (towards the front) but a person with a micrometer could measure both spools at his leisure ,i have the catalogues and reels handy but the micrometer is out in a very cold garden shed :D

i suspect youd make a killing on ebay selling them especially a shallow version ,the chenille channel though might be a tricky job though untill you master it

as far as i can remember the spools are interchangable except the 508/7 mk1's and maybe the 704's) but i ain't sure if the 507 goldmax's spool isn't also a fit as its simular to the 1044's spool which does fit,but i've never had two together to find out, there are a few different styles of spool theres your basic aluminium one (deep) theres a match alloy one and the plastic (1044) shallow one (with breather hole's to prevent a vaccuum forming under the cap and sucking line up from the spool which wraps around the spindle and a little (2mm) bit getting snapped and stuck under the square spring hindering the pin operation.

(you'll notice i've drilled my other spools to get the same effect/benifit !)

it is but you can backwind the others if you remove the anti reverse pawl ,i dont like backwinding so havent used one like it but i know a couple of anglers that have taken them out of their 506's

I have all the kit to measure these at work, the chanille groove will not be a problem, will look into it.

The 506 m is the version with the 1/2 drag feature. Personally the best move abu ever made was bringing out the 501 with the optional anti reverse.

I didnt realise the parts for these reels were so expensive. i have several which have been mothballed and replaced over the years. One of which I sent to tightline services for repair/service. When they returned it it still had the old rotten chenille in the spool so I rang and complained to be told "its not a standard service part!" and yet from memory they used to supply a spare piece when you bought the reel!.

I think its time to have a hunt round and see what reels I have and hit ebay with them.

Despite the rain I went out this morning. The river had a lot of colour in it which was not a good omen because of the amount of grit & salt that had probably been washed in. I found the abu easy to use but it did feel a bit dated, maybe it needs taking apart and having a good clean and oil. I liked they way the line peeled off the spool with the current and found it would let it out too freely at times, I missed a few bites because i had too big a bow in the line. After that I started holding the line back as mentioned on another thread and managed to catch a small chub of about a pound and a roach about half that. The rain finally got the better of me and I went home looking like a drowned rat.
