I need to buy car tax for my missuses car this month. If I go tomorrow how will they know what to charge me? It's 1999 car, but it doesn't appear in http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/search/vedSearch.asp .

You get the brown and sticky end of the stick, I'm afraid.

Registered before 1st March 2001:

Not over 1549cc 110.00/60.50

Over 1549cc 175.00/96.25

That's 12/6 months, obviously.

Hi all

i see on sky 2night about these budget annoncements and how they basically only cover`d what would benefit there (fatcat)pockets and how things like the nhs didnt come into anything.

also heard more on the car tax rise which i have to say is just taking the wizz and basically what you`d expect from people who drive big bmw`s and jags.

so yet again this country has bent over and taken it big style AGAIN!!!!how far will they push up petrol and fags(considering they know fags accounts for a fair wallop of the revenue in this country)they know people will pay cos it basically ends with (sod the smokers lets tax them after all they are going to die and we will leave it to the nhs to take the stress )this is already having an effect by this obese and smoking thing(turning away the damned)fair enough by me!!

familys can barly make ends meet now!!and by the 1st april it will make it even more expensive to commute to work or drop the brats off in ,yep you got it MPV and gass gusslers which is one item which will get a higher road tax increase.

jabber jabber sorry

Diesel vehicles registered after 1st March 2001 with emissions of over 185 g/km will have Road Tax of £195 per year.

All vehicles registered from 23rd March 2006 (tomorrow) with emissions of over 225 g/km will have top-rate Road Tax of £210 per year for petrol engines and £215 for diesel engines

Guest Brumagem Phil

The chancellor missed a trick here IMO...... he could have ditched duty on band B cars (or made it a nominal amount like 25 quid) and hiked the top two bands to compensate. Until there is a much bigger and therefore meaningful difference between the bands then people wont take it into consideration when buying their car.

Imagine for example if annual tax on a band B car was 20 quid but for a band F one it was 300 or even 400 quid. Its the only way to make people start thinking about the issue.

I dont accept billy500's remarks about it taxing the commutor or school run jockey off the road........it might however make them think twice before buying some 2 ton gaz guzzling mobile chicane! By buying sensible they may actually SAVE money, not just in excise duty but also on both their fuel bills AND insurance.

i agree ,i have had gas guzzling (too the extreme) landrovers but now run a little golf ,cheeeeeeap insurance ,dirt cheap parts ,you can fix it yourself (unlike new ones) and its reliable.

on the other hand we also have an espace (bought for camping) which is the opposite ,it may be put on the road this year but due to a fixed income it may not .

the tax on these 4x4's you see lined up outside schools stopping the traffic because the drivers cant handle them should have been upped well beyond what the fashion factor dictates ,theres certainly no advantage in one except in the unlikely chance of snow here in the south and snow has never stopped me either in a 2 wheel drive car or even on the bike

the "safety" factor the users quote doesent apply to the car these 4x4's plough through in a crash and i doupt in modern 4x4's even for its own occupants compared to an ordinary car :(
