If you want to see some birds then chuck it away and give them some fresh stuff, it'll be pretty rancid by now whatever it is.

 

If you really want to see birds on your feeders: 1 kg of peanuts whizzed up in a blender, add 500g of melted beef dripping and as many raisins as you can get into the mix and have it still hold together.

The birds in my garden won't eat the cheap fat-balls, even in really hard weather, they are just untouched.

It would seem the logic is just the same as that applied to baits and groundbaits . For best results one needs to get basic materials of good quality and then make up your own. Homecooking is best !

Believe me when we threw the balls under the hedge they were eaten pretty quickly black or no black ,its the garden they dont like the food is fine .

Its to open for then to be happy crapping in it never mind eating ,we can see birds in the hedge 2feet away lolking at the feeders but extremely rarely they go on them .

Unfortunately the old lady next door had the hedge cut so the long bits we encouraged to "shade" the feeders went but even before that what mostly ate the food was an acrobatic pair of mice that lived in a nearby bird box

Update we do get birds in the garden ,on watching a recording of a badger trundling around the front garden a few minutes later we spotted a tawny owl sitting on our dustbin in the back garden ,i may pop it on dropbox if it amuses anyone enough to want a peek
