Swans are evil buggers. On a water I fish they regularly kill all other baby birds - ducks, grebes, coots. I know they are doing it to give their own offspring a better chance but it's still not a nice thing to behold. That said the mink generally take most of the cygnets so it's a tough old life all around I guess.

The fight actually got a lot worse, one of them became exhausted and was being held by the neck and being held under the water. This was when I put the camera away and started to hurl lumps of rock at them (and another bloke with me).

I just thought it was one of the most horrific scenes I have ever witnessed....

Ah yes. In Spring, a youngish male animal's thoughts turn to .... the best way to kill a rival so he can get the girl(s).

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

It may be worth giving this place a call. If the fight was as bad as you say the Swan may need urgent help.

Ok this was nature at it's best, but Swans are protected and every wild animal needs our help; especially with the amount that die every year due to our negligence ...

There are places like all over the country where they care for injured wildlife and then return them back to the wild.

I remember when my wife rang the RSPCA once, as there was a swan wandering in the middle of a busy road. They didn't give a toss.

It seems to be a prime example of natural selection. I guess the pen was waiting for the winner to mate with her. Savage though it is, it is nature's way of ensuring that only the fittest survive and breed.

Fabulous pictures Den and an interesting spectacle I would think!
