Looking for Some Advice, A doggy question

I'm no expert in this but I see no reason why dogs can't get depression - which could be connected with his hormonal cycle. I would go to the vets and get it checked out whatever. Could be something very simple to treat and puts him back into fine form again. As an aside I'd keep a diary card of when he does it and what he does and how long it lasts.

Rob.

You got a good idea there Rob. He is as right as rain today but I know it will happen again in a week or so. Will keep a diary for a couple of weeks then get him to the vet. I must agree with Ian as far as I am aware 14 is old age for a Jack Russell. Many thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply and give their opinion, it was much appreciated, I reckon its definately the Vet, but will see if we can come up with a pattern for a couple of weeks first, was also given Diabetes as a cause, so I reckon nothing can be ruled out. Once again folks Thanks

Personally Orca I would take him to the vets, just to be safe :)

I woke up the other day to let the dogs out and Magic (our yorkshire terrier) I thought she was dead :o She couldn't stand, everytime I picked her up, she just fell over. Eventually (with the aid of glucose) she come around, bit by bit.. I thought she suffered from a stroke or something. Took her to the Vets and it turned out she had been poised some how (he said that it could have been many things, eating a dead mouse, leaf etc). Now thankfully she is ok :)

Orca, !4 is a good age for a JR, but also the sort of age when problems start to appear. If your dog appears to be "just sittin" for no reason, then take it from me, there IS a reason....may be a sudden pain, loss of bearings, simply fed up with it all (usually denotes a health problem)

Get him/her to a vet ASAP and have a blood test done.....

Good luck little dog :)

Not sure where you got that idea from TubularBelle. I have had three JRTs in my lifetime and 14 is certainly not middle aged for a JRT or for any dog.

Well small dogs can easilly live to about 19 years of age and for a breed like a JRT they could still be quite youngish at 14, not suffering from severe age related problems just yet. I was thinking a JRT would stay healthy longer because they are so sprightly, sorry if I got it wrong.

I definitely think the problem is hormonal, as someone suggested, depression from not being able to get any anymore.

I hate getting up early, I didn't even realise there were two 6 o'clocks in one day!

I'm not being patronising but if it was middle aged at 14 you would be looking at a life expectancy of around 28. A little beyond a canine companions capabilities - I'm sure you'll agree. Most people regard middle age for us to be around the forties with a good innings being all out by your eighties. Maybe middle aged means something different in Oz?

14 years is a very good age for any dog, especially a pedigree breed (Mongrels do tend to live a bit longer). Of course, you do get the odd one that lives past that age, just as you get people living beyond 100 years. The normal life expectancy for a dog however is between 12-14 years.

Orca, I strongly urge you to take Peanut to the vet as soon as you can. It might just be a stomach upset, but on the other hand it could be something more serious....

Sorry JR is not too good Orca, they are a smashing breed arn't they. I agree 14 is a good age but if he is not too stiff around the joints then thats a bounus.

Do you have medical insurance for Peanut? Everybody knows that vets can be very expensive, and you bet they always suggest a blood test and then a health check up, which can soon amount to £100's I had a Belgian Griffon who had a problem a few years back, and nearly died, she had the full 'Monty' check up which cost loads. The diagnosis was a heart condition and tablets were prescribed. I had to take the dog to the vet every month for her check up and re-prescription so the bills just mounted up. In the end I just reduced the prescribed tablets and wittled it down to zero, and guess what she improved, and went on to live another seven years. The moral of the story is vets have got you over an emotional barrel, go careful.

Do you have another dog? Companionship is a great booster, he might just be hankering after a bit of company, check his stools are they firm, eyes are they clear, gums are they pinkish not white, feel for his heart does it have a regular rhythm, is he alert when you call him. Diet, is he off his food? feed chicken as a treat, or tripe they love it, and its rich in vitamins. Best of luck to you both.
