If you go for mint keep it contained as it will take over your garden :)

 

And when she says "contained", that doesn't mean sinking a pot in the soil will do. We tried that and the roots escaped .. mint everywhere :angry: Grow it above ground.

Best plan is to put your compost heap there or plan B rhubarb :)

Dont plant periwinkle, it spreads like crazy! Hydrangas will survive in the shade, theres a climbing variety too. Ferns look good but need damp aswell. Dry shade is real tricky. Coleus grow here newt but dont stand the frosts.

Coleus do grow here but are frost tender so no good till june. One with lots of colour that doeasnt mind shade is everybodys fave - Busy lizzie. Astilbe (try astilbe sprite) like damp shade as do hostas. If you want a bush try Acuba (spotted LAurel) it will grow anywhere in anything. I also grow ferns in the shade. Anything that grows in a wood will grow with little light. Remember hydranga need acidic soil to thrive so dig a big hole and fill with leaf mould or peat.
