GCSE in Angling

With a couple of our AN guys doing their GCSE's at the moment, may I suggest there's no earthly reason why there shouldn't be a GCSE in angling. Basic syllabus would be easy - equipment, species, waters, baits, techniques, maybe some 'ethics' thrown in ... and some practical sessions :)

At 'A' level it could get more demanding. Sample exam questions :

1) The close season - discuss in not more than 500 posts. (Edit - that should be words)

2) Carp as livebait, and the International implications. What is your view?

3) Discuss the role of coarse fish in a healthy 21st century diet. What are the best seasonings?

4) Outline the role of electronics in modern coarse angling, avoiding sexual references (abusive or derogatory remarks will be penalised).

5) Describe at least 3 useful techniques for removing tangles in braided line. Illustrate where possible with line drawings.

any more exam questions you can think of? ;)

Write a short piece (about 500 words) about your favourite day's fishing. See how many times you can include the words Pescaviva and Dynamite Baits.

Calculate the weight of the tackle, bait, food and personal belongings that you carry to the waterside. Now calculate the weight of the same at the time that you leave. What is the difference between the two figures and how much weight will you save carrying by leaving the cans and wrappers on the bank?

  • 2 years later...

Its available in Scotland. AFYD (Angling for Youth Development) have a Scottish Progressive Qualification in Game Angling. They are hoping to expand it across the UK in the future.

'To what extent are angling choices determined by social class'? (How true is it that the working classes are more likely to coarse then they are to game fish).

Perhaps that's worth a discussion in here too?

what is social class and how does it effect angling choices.

its not cost theres carp syndicates that cost more a year than salmon angling.

its not who owns what theres more water in "working class" hands than the gentry

so what is social class and what choices?

a GCSE or A level in angling would fit in nicely with "media" studies and ropey old mythical stuff like playing tricks with peoples mind (but with a Harley st address ofcourse but no science behind it) or silly cults etc :D

i may include a chesters1 ology ,only £500 as a backhand and you'l pass ,with this certificate you can pretend to be (or allude to be ) qualified (hinting at medically) in any old crap a bit like corgi registration (or was now we have a new certificate) hand over £xxx and youl get a bit of paper with no guarantee you'l ever use the stuff you did to get it

unless theres hard and fast laws how things are there shouldn't be any qualifications available otherwise your passing or failing (do people fail any more) on an opinion not a provable result.

why do so many people get art and media quals because its all based on opinion :D

my question would be though " is it ethical to raise an insect that wouldn't probably exist to trap one that normally wouldn't eat it"

your balancing raising something to kill it but not with the excuse you will eat it but use it to catch something your not going to eat anyway.unlike raising human food theres little real excuse or is there? should we ban live food but use fake food ,boilies are fake food as are plastic baits should we forgo living baits? will angling be "cleaner" in the masses eyes ,no change baits are not discussed! fish themselves are not furry so only raise the hackles of the weird and lonely and those that crave attention.

angling is strange its close to eastern thoughts on catching wild birds just to release them ,they raise no eyebrows there would it here ? big yes but over there you eat freshwater fish you catch

is catching small birds to release a sport over there?
