1.8 million? The money wasting capacity of councils and government is pretty phenominal these days. They could have put this to much better use, but no, instead there giving it this "Capital of Culture" schpeel. liverpool is not a capital of culture at all. What exactly is cultural about Liverpool? O.k, so they've done it up a bit, but there still is no culture there that makes it stand out from other cities in terms of how people live their lives e.t.c. I feel sorry for the liverpudlians who fall for this tripe and don't realise that their tax's are being stolen to create something which aims to try to make liverpool seem like a buzzing and briliant place to be to the rest of the world, when in fact, even if it does succeed in doing so, it's not going to change their lives as individuals anyway. It's corporate and capitalistic and it's not made for the people of Liverpool at all, its for outsiders, in far flung places such as China and Japan. We get the old story that this brings in jobs to the area e.tc e.t.c, but then we did when they decided to make the casino in Manchester, everyone got excited about that and then the people got **** all over when they pulled out of it.

I know it sounds quite over the top and i may be talking complete rubbish, so if i am, please inform me what you think is going on with things such as this. I also think that the Olympics are the same. When it was the Beijing Olympics there were thousands of companies in Britain alone, who jumped on the band wagon and used "in association with the 2008 Beijing Olympics" crap. The people who won Gold medals in such things as swimming, athletics and cycling compete with one another week in week out, and no-one gives a shiney ****. If you like sport then you can watch Usain Bolt race every month of the track season if you like, you can watch the worlds toughest sporting event in the world, the tour de france, played out on eurosport, so why not?

This is not a poke at the athletes, i have more respect for them than most people in society, however, when you take time out to think about the ins and outs, pro's and cons, then it becomes quite obvious to me that its all a way for the gliteraty to become even richer off the backs of normal, working people.

Does anyone else not think that this spider thing is a waste of money? Hw can it help anyone?

Actually it is an astonishing piece of work. There were hundreds of people standing in the rain gawping at it this lunchtime. There is always an outcry when money is spent on "art". It was the same with Antony Gormleys iron men statues on Crosby beach, but the moans about spending so much on them was totally eclipsed by the protests when it was suggested that they should be taken away! A similar thing happened with the daft lambanana statue. As part of the '08 celebrations scores of mini lambananas sprouted up all over the city, decorated by local schoolkids.

Incidentally these two pieces of "art" were in place long before Liverpool became the European Capital of Culture.

It is nonsense to say that getting the award doesn't affect the ordinary people of Liverpool. If it did nothing else it focussed the council's mind on forcing the completion of a lot of projects which would have otherwise dragged on for years. Last year I could count seventeen tower cranes from my office window, now I can see two!

There are far more important things than art. With councils saying we cannot afford this or that service I hardly think it is the time to be wasting rate payers money on things like this. Schools would have benefitted far more with a cash injection like that and just maybe it would have helped kids to enjoy some art. It is all bloody top heavy and arty farty, it is not aimed at the people in the street, yes they stop and stare and wonder what idiots allocated all the money for a gaint metal spider.

Whinge, whinge, whinge, whinge, whinge.

I think it is a brilliant piece of sculpture. I don't think that Liverpool is going to get to keep the spider, they are just having on loan.

As for maxaldos rant, I can only assume that maxaldo is a southerner, he obviously knows little about Liverpool.

BTW where do you get the £1.8m from? It does not mention anything about cost in the BBC Item.

He doth not speak with forked tongue £1.8m is the figure and it was commissioned so one would assume it is in it's final resting place and not return from whence it came.
