One choice only.

My Drennan Super Specialist Avon/Quiver twin top and Shimano Aero fixed spool, simply because that's what I use for most of my fishing; it does for my float fishing for tench and my quivertip fishing for barbel and chub, and that's most of what I do these days. And it will do most other things I might want, though not terribly well for some of them.

That's the versatility angle.

If I could only ever have one choice of fishing and the gear to go with it, that's a harder question.

It would have to be float fishing, so I will take my 13' match rod. The pin would be nice to have, but not good for the sort of stillwater float fishing at range I might like to do. I'll compromise on my closed face reel, an ancient Silstar job. I used to use it for all my light float fishing and legering anyway, so it's no hardship. I'll have a better one, though, if the rules allow. My rod is a Browning, but really any nice 13' match rod will do.

"Horrible Mind Games" indeed

I think I will have to join the versatility camp and go for:

Rod

Fox Specialist Duo 0.5lb test curve, with its normal top it makes a reasonable job of float fishing and light feeder fishing, put the quiver top on it and a choice of four tips cover most of your other legering options. It has caught me Carp up to 17lb so it will handle most fish even small river Barbel at a push.

Reel

I have always matched this rod with a small match sized bait-runner type reel; I am using Okuma Centurion 30's at the moment with no complaints, so I would use them loaded with spools of 3 and 5lb mono and a spool of 10lb braid if I am allowed it.

Rod...Shimano 3.9mtr Aero Match,

Reel Shimano 4010

Both will handle almost any fishing situation...and they have been used for trotting/feeder fishing/surface fishing/rolling baits for barbel, and the rod for quite a bit of what it was actually designed for.

No way would I limit myself to the restrictions of using a pin.

MG, I did, post 6 :huh::nerd:

John.

SORRY. :(

Fishing seems to be my favorite form of loafing.

"Even a bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work."

I know the joy of fishes in the river through my own joy, as I go walking along the same river.

What do you think if the float does not dip, try again I think.

11ft Masterline fen river rod

Dawia bite N run reel l

Love using this setup, rod is quite a light tc but has some real backbone...light for holding all day, & not putting on banksticks but can get fish out of the snags.

Used this setup for barbel as well in floodwater conditions....spot on
