On bigger rivers like the Thames, baiting up with mashed bread and then fishing bread has worked well for me, I think because the mash pulls them upstream for quite a distance.

Andrew, how do you get the mashed bread into the swim? Do you use a bait dropper? The only time I tried it I balled it in by hand. it certainly went miles downstream, but there wasn't any in the chosen swim! Maybe I hadn't squeezed all the air out.

If it's slow and shallow enough, balling it in by hand is fine. Otherwise, I use a big feeder. Using the feeder takes a lot longer but at least you know it's in the right place.

Phone, in the UK bread punch is mostly seen as a "dink" method - and very good it is too. I've seen people make giant punches out of empty shotgun cartridges, but most bread punches make discs of bread maybe an eighth to a quarter of an inch across.
