im a fairly new carp fisherman, by that i mean i coarse fish and put out a carp rod as well. but im hoping to go out fishing soon on carp sessions.

anyway, where i fish at the moment in lakes and canals, the canal seems to have alot of snags, probaly a few tesco trolleys dumped over the bridge near by lol.

i fish a hair rig, is there another method i can get round the snags, but beeing able to put a rod out while i continue to coarse fish.

many thanks.

S_Mac,without meaning to be condecending snag fishing for carp is quite specialist.Might be a good idea to get a few more big fish under your belt before attempting it?

then again that said I suppose there will always have to be a "first time"! Maybe this rubbish I hashed together for a Sweddish carp site may help give you some pointers-

i understand and agree with what your saying. the point i was trying to get across not to well i admit was. when i put out a hair ring, i seem to be snagged by the hook each time. i was wondering was there a method past that. to keep the bait off the bottom maybe, but still fishing the hair rig. i have not learned any other methods yet. but i will hopefully be learning them next month. as someone said earlier and quite rightly, am i looking for just a way to fish 2 rods. not really, i am practicing for now, by putting out a carp rod and fishing my normal method. but i would like to also get into session carp fishing... i believe i am taking the right gear for carp. 2.75 test curve rod, large landing net, unhooking mat and mouth swab.

if i am missing something, i would be very grateful for any advice.

When you say your "getting snagged by the hook" can you give some more details? is the hook getting caught on weed or rubbish? is it when you wind in? or are you just winding in to find your hook covered in weed? More details you could give the more we could try and understand your problem and hopefully help you?

the hook is snagged as i real in. no weed problems.. im just wondering is there some method that maybe keeps the hook length float. i was down today checking out the part i wanted to fish. i think i have a found the snag and can get round it now. but a floating method would help if you have one.

many thanks

If a floating presentation of your hookbait will help catch fish, there are certainly some ways to make that happen.

Otherwise, about the best precaution I can think of is when you want to pull in your rig, give a good, strong 'pop' as if you were trying to set the hook into a monster fish. This should quickly get your rig off the bottom. Then it is a matter of reeling in as fast as you can manage to keep the rig up in the water.

Often the part that gets 'snagged' isn't the hook at all but rather your weight or feeder or something else on the line. They are supposed to break away if they are rigged properly but that won't always happen.

If it is the hook and if the "pop & wind fast" retrieve doesn't do it, you might consider using a circle pattern hook since they are much less likely to hang on a snag than other designs.

I too don't follow the problem. If you keep getting the hook snagged and have to pull for a break then don't fish there - move to a different spot. If it's just bottom weed or rocks etc then find clearer spots or you could perhaps overcome it with a pop up.
