Grayling Bash, Timsbury 2006

Hi Chavender,

Glad you had a good day :-)

What was the water colour like, and the depth?

I've found that this time of the year the shallows is a good place to fish for grayling.

You can often clearly see the bottom, just a few inches down, but no fish.

And then your float goes under and a grayling or trout has magically taken the bait, even though you can't see any fish at all amongst the stones.

Then another does the same .......... :)

Was anyone fishing the rippling shallow bits of the river?

water was clear, depth was between 2-4ft on main river and deeper on some of the carriers with not much flow on main river,i could see the fish smoe smaller ones at my feet and a dozen or so descent fish 2lb+ milling about just a rod and half length out and 5 yards down stream i caought a lot of fish to start with but when i got the bigger brownies they where tail walking and leaping out of the water trying to throw the hook or swimming in circles in the swim.they where becomming wary of the maggots rushing upto them then turning away in disgust, i tried a bit of crumpet ( use the soft upper portion as mash [just wet & squeese) and pinch a bit of the rubbery bottom on the hook ) they checked it out but no takers, just fish mainly white maggots, most places was fished i had a small brownie from just beyond the island.most people ended under the trees on the carriers.

Fished Timsbury Today :)

Weather in the morning was mild & sunny, became overcast later, and rained, but not much.

I've not seen the river so clear, the last 3 times I've been there, despite all of the recent rain.

Early on the fish were feeding well, and I had some good grayling (for Timsbury), a couple going nearly 1lb approx, and some large brownies up to around 4lb. Lost a few decent fish to barbless hooks.

A change to sweetcorn just about doubled my bites.

But around 1pm the river went dead, not just me, the fish just stopped feeding.

I went onto the carriers, saw some largish carp and big roach in the slow carrier and wasted my time stalking them, they just weren't interested, but the brownies were!

Had a number of small grayling from the fast carrier, very clear water, shallow, and no sign of the fish, but they were there, mainly over gravel and weed beds, oh and more brownies.

Finished up fishing in the pool near the car park where I was getting a few bites on sweetcorn (only thing to stop the minnows). I was convinced they were roach, but couldn't hit them until finally I nailed one around 6oz.

A really enjoyable day.

Sounds great Leon! I'm really looking forward to fishing at Timsbury - the thought of those big roach and carp drifting around the slow carrier will keep me going until the 5th :)

A big roach from the Test would be very special. In fact, just fishing on the Test will be very special!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

It was interesting that the fish stopped feeding after lunch.

Looking back that has happened before when I've been at Timsbury, and it seems that Chavender experienced it as well.

By the way, the journey there and back was extended by big delays on the M25, something that just seems to be getting worse :(

See, we're cleverer than you, Leon, as we've planned for this. We're not going to have lunch until 4:30pm.

Sorted!

er,

I'd eaten all of my sandwiches by 11am.

The fish finished their lunch around 2pm.
