Corydoras, Spectators do not constitute a sport, if it did "Dogging" in the local park could be on the London Olympics sports list! if so what price England don't get a gold medal?

I am a match angler .....not an anti-Christ!!!]

ASs I posted on another current thread, match angling does have spectators. In fact they can be a problem for both organisers and spectators.

I still have problems equating match angling as a sport. Just because it's a competition does not tranform it into a sport. I will admit that it is a skill, that I don't posess but I have problems with the concept of it being a sport.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Thought this would be a simple answer to a simple question but thinking about it, it isn't, for me it certainly isn't a religion I already have one of those, I don't fish competitively so it isn't a sport, a pastime is something I could do just to pass the time take it or leave it, and it definitely isn't that, though a lot of time passes when I'm doing it.

So that leaves hobby or way of life...

Hobby is something I would do regularly when the mood takes me and this almost fits the bill, but angling is something I care passionately about, think about at sometime every day, plan my free time around, am prepared to lose money over, I can't envisage a time when I wouldn't be an angler. I am interested and involved with not only the doing but helping others to do... so

it has to be a way of life.

Our perception of time as an orderly sequence of regular ticks and tocks has no relevance here in the alternative dimension that is fishing....... C.Yates

I'm not sure Bob, I just have some kind of mental block that prevents me seeing match fishing as one. I have the same problem with darts and snooker if thats any compensation, and at least they draw a crowd.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Well what about "Dogging" then?....that usually draws a few spectators.

From what I've heard that can be very 'athletic' Bob. And the participants can be very sporting. Much cardio vascular activity.

That is if you forget your boxing gloves. :P;)

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

As a follow up to the 'Yes again we rule the world' thread I would like to take a poll to see what angling means to AN members. Personally I just don't even get the concept of angling being a 'sport', but that is just me, what is angling to you?

I just enjoy fishing, it's a thing I have grown up doing with my mates, family etc and I would consider it to be a pastime/ hobby.

Match fishing I would consider to be a sport as it's a competition. It's the same as jogging is a pastime and exercise to a lot of people but then again it's a highly competitive sport to others who compete (to win)!

Now your just being daft. At least dogging is a bit more strenous than being sat on your ass clutching a pole for 5 hours.
