"poor" cod

*Ant*

Recommended Posts

I've seen in where-to-fish guides in sea mags the term "poor cod". Now i've always thought this term refered to there being not many cod. BUT.....I have recently seen the term "lots of poor cod at.......".

Now I know of cod and I know of codling, but what the hell are poor cod?

Cheers Leon, think I may have caught one in the past. :)

You and many others - I think a lot of Poor Cod are caught and the angler thinks "another pesky pouting" and chucks it back in the sea without looking closely at it.

Next time you catch a "Pout" that seems less deep in the body than usual, look carefully at the relative positions of the leading edges of the first anal and dorsal fins - in the Pout the first anal fin starts vertically below the leading edge of the first dorsal fin, in the Poor Cod the first anal fin starts rather further back - below the middle of the first dorsal.

I've never caught a Poor Cod bigger than two ounces - has anyone else on AN ?? (Over to Davy - King of the Poor Cods and Topknots when the skate aren't biting)

Hiya, I had a trip with Ronnie Campbell last year and were catching poor cod to about 6oz off of two small islands when we were spinning for pollock. For the life of me I cant remember the name of them,I've mentioned the spot to Davy before now as we were getting Pollock to 8-9lbs. Not me however. :( mine were going to about 4lbs.

Cheers Norrie - I think I know the two islands you mean, so on my next trip to Oban I will be looking for a PB Poor Cod!

We get quite a few Poor Cod of the Isle of Lewis, often anglers picking them up when fishing small baits over hard ground, such as when fishing for Cuckoo Wrasse during competition.

Our club record is only a small 7 oz, I'll search about and see if I have a photo of one somewhere. They are often confused with small Pouting as Vagabond says.

Often confused with small pout!

Super in a species comp.

They are slimmer than a pout, with a proportionally larger eye.

Great bass and cod bait.

:D

By the way there appears to be no British record in Sea Fish or Sea Mini Species .......

not that many of us would want it anyway!

I would imagine 8oz to be the biggest.
