Pirana in Stockport !

For some seriously fun fishing, you might want to try the Florida Everglades where there is now a very healthy breeding population of Oscars.

I haven't been down there yet but I'm told they are lots of fun on light tackle.

I`ve got a breeding pair of those in one of my tanks, bot are around 10" in length and I`ve no idea how much they weigh.

I`ve also got another at around 13" in another tank

I had always thought that the Piraya or Rio São Francisco Piranha (Pygocentrus piraya) was the biggest of the 'true' Piranha, and it only reaches about 12" maximumum

With due respect - cobblers :)

I am posting from Belem, Brazil, having just had a week on the Xingu. Plenty of piranhas there. I have had several Black Piranha, best over 4 lb (2kg plus according to my Boga grip) - have also had Piranha Camarie (that´s a golden-cheeked job) over 2 lb.

The records for both Black and Red-bellied Piranha are over 8 lb.

Full report and piccys upon our return - but I won`t be able to convey the fearsome click of their teeth as you try to unhook them. Hooked one on an ABU lure, and it bit clean through the lure, and escaped with the rear end of it!

Since last post have explored some mangrove swamps on the islands of the Amazon delta.

Came across the Red-bellied piranha there - and caught a dozen or so. At about half-a-pound apiece they were not as big as the two species of piranha I had in the Xingu but were converted into piranha soup - one of Brazil´s traditional dishes - good stuff.

Just landed at Belem port - the fish market there had tons of arapaima (piraracu) on the stalls - plus lots of giant catfish of several sorts. Off to Mato Grosso tomorrow.

Keep posting the trip reports old friend. Fun stuff to read.

Have now reached Miami (and the first AN connection for a fortnight) and fly home tonight.

Have added one other piranha species to my personal list, from Mato Grosso.

I haven't got my notes handy, but I think that makes four piranha species for the trip - and about two dozen other species which I will report on when we get home.

Have now fished at seven different localities in the Amazon Basin (only one of which was at a recognised fishing lodge) and its been well worth the time, trouble, expense, sweat, bites, stings, discomfort, risk and effort, to say nothing of the long flights, waiting at airports, and making ourselves understood in pidgin Brazilian Portugese!

Vagabond

Did you manage to escape the attentions of the Candirú?

After a certain age, if you don't wake up aching in every joint, you are probably dead.

:lol: Absolutely (Always point it upstream  )

Just to wind you up, two separate sightings of Harpy Eagle (one a fully fledged youngster devouring a monkey)

Also Sungrebe, Musician Wren, Pygmy Kingfisher and a host of others - to say no more of the fishing for now,.
