Starting out

Hi all

Im new to the forums, so to start off with hello to all you reglars :)

Im about to get back into / into properly coarse fishing, and was hoping to ask you guys for some advice about what tackle to get to service my requirements

Obviously i am going to need a rod and reel, for these i had marked down a John Wilson signature avon rod (can get them from ebay for 70quid, is this about right?) but the reel i had drawn a blank on, there are so many! so suggestions there would be good.

Other than the basics, i am going to need landing and keep nets ive seen a set of dragoncarpdirect for about 20quid, anyone know if they are any good?

Overall i would say that i have about 100-120 quid to spend on my new hobby, so my question is - given 100 quid what would you buy, and why...

PS - The style of fishing i would probably prefer is float, with some options for trotting or ledgering.

Hello DookieDave,

Welcome to AnglersNet if you search the Coarse Fishing Forum you will find quite a few threads on starting out fishing.

Looking at your thread I think you have made a good decision to start with a rod as versatile as the JW Avon Quiver, with regard to reels look at the recent threads concerning those from the Okuma stable get one of these and you will not go far wrong.

Aaah 666 the number of the beast!

I'm using an Okuma Interceptor IBF30 with my drennan super specialist duo, a very similar rod to the John Wilson, and have had no problems with it. The reel balances the rod nicely, the drag works effectivly as does the baitrunner. I'm very impressed by all the Okumas I've tried, great value reels.

Hi, welcome,

This was my post on another thread ' rod and reel'

''Mmmmmm,

Without asking what type of fishing you intend to try I'm going to suggest the John Wilson Avon/Barbel rod.

For under £100 you get a decent rod which has a quiver tip top section and a standard top section. In addition I think it also has an extension piece to make the rod longer if necessary.

I guess the test curve is about 1 1/4 lb through action which would be fine for most carp (if you dont want to break any records) tench, chub, barbel, perch, bream, fishing. It should be ok for smaller silver fish too providing you dont want to fish using a really light line.

If I could only have one rod it would be an Avon twin tip! Mine would, of course, be a Bob James Masterline but if you don't want to spend that kind of money the Wilson version is a great package.''

So I completely agree with your choice.

Dont forget to buy a couple of pairs of good fawceps so that you can get any deep hooks out safely.

Agree with the John Wilson choice too, don't have to buy off Ebay though, you can get them brand new from reputable dealers for the same, if not lower, price. I got mine a few months ago from one of this site's sponsors tacklebargains.co.uk, you can find the link on the home page of AN. Use this and AN gets a contribution from the sponsor.

Dave,

Welcome to AN first of all, the JW avon gets rave reviews on here every week, so can't be bad!, also the interceptor from Okuma is quality for the money....

just one thing, sounds like your after big creatures, judging by the tackle - why not forget the keepnet, and buy a decent unhooking mat instead?.

just a thought

Tight lines
