Don't get too much hung up in colours, but if you want a few different options a dark, a light and a brightly coloured version will do :):)

Since it's such a shallow water there's no need to fork out a load of money for any of the more exotic deep diving crankbaits that come over from the USA. Shakespeare's Big S is so cheap that you can buy a few and then doctor them to give you some variety. Try painting them different colours and maybe hacksaw the blade off a couple to make surface poppers.

If the water is mainly populated by smaller pike then don't write off light spinning gear with something like Mepps or Ondex spinners.

Definately go with a lot of what has been said.I too if restricted to one lure would go for a medium guage 5" copper spoon. They are just so versatile.

As Vidar points out its all to easy to get hung up/confussed on colours and patterns. His advice of light, dark and a bright being spot on.

For the depths that you are going to encounter you could do a lot worse than starting off with a Spring Dawg. Easy to cast, dont need really heavy jerkbait gear to cast, easy to work (even just a straight retrieve will catch you fish) and if you shop around quite cheap (the Daiwa copies arnt quite so robust and the tail can often snag the hook but they are dirt cheap and do catch).

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Unless you buy from their sales/"bargain of the day" Ive always found Harris expensive. That said back in the days when Sue and her husband ran it the service was very good.Ive not brought anything recently.

For me I still stick to getting my lures from the US.Had to do this in the old days as it was the only way! but Ive stuck to it as its a lot cheaper! take a look/order a catalogue from Cabelas or Bass Pro for general lures. For more specialist and a larger range of the bigger Pike and Musky lures take a look at Musky Fever or Rolly and Helens Musky Store. Edd at Jackson Lures also does a good service to the UK.Cant be arrsed to look up the url's for their sites but a simple Google search will show them.If not get back to me.

One word of warning, allthough some good lures can be brought cheap on Ebay be carefull. There is not only a lot of rubbish but also some blatent rip offs. One of the most popular at the moment (allthough there seems to have been a bit of a crack down by Ebay on the description) is the selling of "Bulldawg" style baits. These look exactly like the origonal Muskie Inovations ones but sell at half the price.....which is also twice the price you can buy these copies in the tackle shop! Nowt wrong with the copies but buy them at the copy price!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Desert spoons are good too. Gave one to a son-in-law, first fish was his first ever twenty! Easy to make, loads of material at the local Sally-Ann charity shop.

Cabellas in America is excellent. Mind you, knowing a nice American can be useful, received and tried, and did well on too, was a much appreciated Cotton Cordell Wiggle '0' that is already well tooth marked, and that is fishing a Broad that is four to six feet deep.

Peter - glad to hear one of the lures is working for you. With the working depth those things are designed to reach, bottom bumping on the broads should be a doodle.

I do have to say that as expensive as they were I hope you are taking proper care of them. I paid $2.00 - $2.50 for those lures at Cabelas. :D :D

(note - $2.00 US is roughly £1.02)
