Where do mackeral come from

While I was mowing the lawn, and thinking about a spot of fishing it occured to me that I have never caught a mackeral less that 5" or 6" long. Ive caught plenty of tiny whiting and pollack tho, where do they breed and has anyone caught a really small one?

There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like an idiot!

Hiya, The same question was asked a while ago on here...if I remember correctly, the mackeral from the east coast of Scotland come from around Norway....but sure I will be corrected on this... :D

While you are pondering on this question...have a look at the clips I found containing Mackeral, be they Californian Scad Mackeral......seems they swim in partnership with Great Whites... :D:D

I seem to remember the post you are on about Norrie. I think it said there were three main populations around the UK coast. One for the North coming from Norway, another coming up from Spain for the channel and the East coast and yet another coming in from the Atlantic for the west coast.

Up in Orkney we only seem to get jumbo Mackeral. I have yet to see one under about 8 inches long and that seemed very small.

The facility at:

http://www.cefas.co.uk/isea/default.asp

can be used to map spawning and nursery grounds (and much else) for any particular species.

eg

Click on Begin New iSEA session

Open Cefas data folder

Open Fisheries folder

Open Fish Spawning Grounds folder

Open Mackerel folder

and voila!
