most farmers will think you are crazy "taint nothin thar" is very common as they tend to think in generations rather than millennia.

most will be shocked even with a hand full of farm dross that turns up as you dont see much today from a tractor ,so ask if it will be ok just to "try" your luck ,once you get some scrap the farmer could get interested.

some may ask you to find a bit of machinery lost the year before ,Do not promise anything ,tell them it may take years to find it amongst the horse shoes and plough ends but you will try your hardest

Been watching quite a few YouTube metal detecting videos. And not just the 'I found gold' ones, either. I can't wait to give it a go in anger now!

theres some very good ones from the dutch? finding german machine guns under a bit of moss etc where they had been dropped in ww2 ,something we will never find i expect

saying that you will find british stuff all over the place but in bad nick

Aaaargh! Don't make me watch stuff like that! I was up until 3am reading metal detecting magazines last night as it is!

 

Love the way how every find on YouTube draws the comment that it is 'fake'. It appears that, according to YouTube, genuine finds never happen

strangely i'v found more gold and guns without detectors than using one .

i was picking up an average of 5 guns a day ,the odd hand grenade and hundreds of rounds now and again topped off with a 500lb bomb when i worked on the canal and we find gold in "special" places when we go camping.

the bomb disposal were getting so fed up hacksawing guns in half to make them safe (although i doubt if any would fire once they dried out) we lined them up on the bank and the hymac tracked over them and they were chucked in the mud if it was being dumped near the dredging area ,bullets were removed and grenades were made safe right there and taken away.

most guns were enfields ,they didn't look bad covered in mud but if you cleaned it up and let it dry the wood corkscrewed away and the metal suddenly got blisters and flaked away

I just want to get out and have a go with this now. It's doing my head in! Off to the outlaw's today, so no chance. I keep looking at fields in a strange way when I'm walking the dog now. It's really odd, but I'm just wondering what lurks beneath the surface.

 

One thing I do find odd in the magazines; why on earth do metal-detectists wear camo?!!!
