trouble is "treasure hunting" isnt a good scene to be in! it gives out the idea (firmly encouraged by archaeologists ) that people are stripping the country side of loot

i have found more gold not using a detector than i have using one ,good finds are far rarer than you think ,not so much media coverage is given to finding ring pulls ,silver paper and 12 bore cartridge tops but these are 90% of what you find.

mineralisation of the soil gives clues the harder it is to find stuff the more chance there is to find good stuff ,if your detector is humming away nicely the chances are your not in a historically active area ,if its spitting and hissing then you move far slower switch of the discrimination and dig every signal ;) this is what sorts the men from the boys :D that old bit of barbed wire may just be sitting over a coin and coke gives a very coin like signal ,you may end up with a bag of rubbish but you may just find that coin you may have missed avoiding digging that rubbish.

dont rebury it you will just refind it next time ;) and letting the farmer have a choice of this rubbish perhaps will put him off looking through it the next time when you do find goodies.

most farmers are totaly unaware of whats in their fields ,just because its rough old pasture now doesnt mean it was in the past ,half the population died of the black plaque and thousands of villages died and disapeared and far more people lived in the country than towns back then.

no banks means money was stashed somewhere safe and not all was recovered.

metal detecting is like fishing but with more chance of a blank :D

Elton, if you want I'll put you in touch with a guy here who not only uses one of these things he repairs and builds the damn things too!!! Reckon he MAY be able to help?

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

blimey look what i found my last licence ,back then you needed one to use a detector not needed now ofcourse.

the 750D was an excellent machine i made my own in the 70's then slowly went up the cscope range as they came out, blimey doesnt time fly :o

i found our very early that a half hundred weight of ex army land mine detector can only find coins the size of man hole covers and only then with difficulty :D

once autotune was introduced in the machines the hobby was far easier to do ,before that moving the head more than an inch or so higher or lower than where you tuned it (as in detecting on rough grassland or ploughed soil) sent the thing into spaz mode.

keep away from the american machines they cant handle soil with history unless carefully programmed our switch on an go versions easily out perform theirs in default settings.

Cheers, Jeepster :)

Some good advice on here regarding the detectors. Nearer the time, I'll post up some of the ones I'm looking at and see what people think.

There are quite a few farms here, about 2 minutes walk from my house, and I know one of the farmers. He'll be the first person I ask. It would be a handy starting point. As we live on top of a hill, I reckon it's as good a place as any. My theory being that people seemed to like being on top, rather than at the bottom, of hills.

  • 2 years later...

Guess what?? I might actually get one this year!!!!!

I've been told to research and write it down.

Of course, this has nothing to do with the boss wanting an expensive iPod for her Christmas present :D

yay ,mind you i have found more gold in the last 3 years not using one than i have since the 70's using one :D

theres some great metal detector footage on youtube to get excited about but that will soon be knocked out of you in real life on a wet night after work :D

around here because of its location its 303 cases by the million and the foil that kept them dry in the boxes ,i shocked my old boss once by predicting what each signal was while he watched me engrossed in his garden ,after a while you can even "see" shotgun cart ends before you dig them up :D

nothing like the glint of hammered though

your areas looks good for saxon ,its more roman here the whole area was described as a "poor area" as its on sand so little agriculture bar along the river flood plains.

try and get a UK made machine as our soil is far more mineralised than american soils as its been in use far longer ,coke will be your enemy besides ring pulls in the main
