Lock Bumping

On the shop you can only lock or unlock the doors from inside, a very handy security ploy when your living on the premises.

So you cannot lock up if you ever plan to leave for a while?

I typically use Schlage keylocks and deadbolts on my jobs, and have installed them in my home entry doors, but when I get a chance I'm going to test them. Haven't had any burglaries in my area, but you never know.

I don't know if anyone still has or remembers the old fashion 'Rim locks'. They used to be the standard back door lock on most mass build houses. As far as I am aware there were only six possible key variations. Didn't take a lot to undo every house in the road. My parents house was built in the 1930s. they purchased a prefabricated garage in the 1960s. both the front doors of the garage, the side door and the house back door were all the same key. About 10 years ago my next door neighbours son had left his door key inside his house and was unable to get in. I tried my key in his lock and opened the door. Both houses now have fresh doors and locks but it does not inspire confidence.

Scary stuff.

Mind you, if I thought the inhabitant of a house may have a loaded Glock to hand, I'd think twice before breaking in :D

CCTV again is very cheap and wireless systems can be fitted by anyone who knows how to put a couple of screws in, these can be connected to your pc via USB port and when activated downloaded onto a remote server, so destroying or removing the equipment is useless. Alongside each camera is a PIR light so intruders feel like stage performers rolleyes.gif laugh.gif Not good for their image laugh.gif

we have cctv on the front which is handy for ignoring people we dont wish to see ,and 3 or four cameras in the shed waiting for me to put them up ,unfortunately all are the wired versions and B&W but for £5 the lot not bad.

just because we dont have a crime rate yet doesent mean there wont be one in the future as i heard tales of a stranger in the vicinity only last month :o

i just wish the doors were worth putting real locks on but when a kick will break easily the frame anyway its pointless.

the front door is glazed so the good yale deadlocks dont fit .

Got that one covered with our own entrance which is the same type of door with a security locking system which because of its' strength has been critised by the fire service and others for making a forced entry during an emergency is extremely difficult.

I guess you can't win

Lock bumping has been around for years, as has picking, raking, etc, etc. You've got to remember that these are non-destructive methods of entry. If a chav wants to get in your house, shed, etc, etc, he'll generally use a brick as it's simpler and easier. Bump keys can be bought quite cheaply for the average Legge, Yale, etc, as can most non-destructive entry equipment.

Incidentally, I raked an expensive and heavy duty fireproof safe in under 5 seconds using my pick set, so there are exceptions to using a brick I suppose.

Guys you are all missing the most important point here.Locks are only to keep honest people out. If a thief wants to get in he will no matter what locks you are using.
