Parliamentary majorities for idiots

Irrespective of your political stance, what do others make of the infant-school "explanation" of parliamentary majorities as presented by the BBC ?

There was this stick-insect character last night laying tiles along Downing Street.......

More patronising than John Snow if that were possible

I found myself exclaiming "$$$$ off you moron, the six-year-olds went to bed hours ago"

....and blast me he isn't back again this evening laying his tiles and explaining how the Tories went from zero to 331 seats and are thus "in No 10"

Why this dumbing down of what is a pretty simple concept ?, or have I overestimated the intelligence of TV watchers ?

Or possibly the English language literacy level according to the station that prepared the cartoon. At one time the US military had gone to comic books for some of their teaching aids. Not sure if they still do it or not.

Mencken's dictum probably applies to the UK too;

"Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."

I don't have a TV but pretty much every time I sit down in front of one, I have a Ripley moment.

Your "stick insect" - otherwise known as Jeremy Vine - is a well-respected vendor of ultra-condescension on the BBC.

You only have to listen in to his daily R2 lunchtime "rant" where he regularly over-simplifies the issues of the day for what must be a reasonably adult audience.

It is his style, but I think you have a good point in that the political commentators feel they need to explain in great detail what the vast majority of us have a sound working knowledge of.

I found the whole evening (up until I folded at 2:30 a.m.) pretty entertaining though, great to see self-important prats denying the inevitable defeat for so long.

1 Thanks for that, I now know who to avoid as he was definitely bad for my blood pressure. He did get carried away with his own cleverness with his "house of cards" analogy of the collapse of the Lib-Dems - a very complex demonstration of the fact that 49 from 57 leaves 8.

2. I found the rest of the coverage fascinating rather than entertaining. As you say, a lot of pompous prats in denial, with the odd rant about the "ungrateful electorate" to liven things up. Pleased about the outcome though.
