4 to 5 years or 45 years? ;)

I don't think too much has changed a great deal, has it? What did he fish for?

The best time to fish is when you have a chance.

he hasn't fished for 4 or 5 years.... just the other day when i was round his house he said that he has bought improve your coarse fishing magazine and didn't even know what some of the stuff in there even was, then when i asked, he said "alot".

Also he stated just how much fishing stuff is camo these days, made me think just how much of it we all have!

Oh thats just marketing to keep us buying and provide the trade with a ready cash flow.

I've bought a whole load of IYCF back issues and the same tactics and gear is being used today as 3 years ago.

Its just the lipstick on the turkey thats different.

I don't think angling has changed much in the past 5 years. I reckon the biggest change is the growth of overstocked, featureless puddles known as Commercials. Also, there has been a pellet "revolution" in the last few years - along with fishmeal based baits, grounbaits and additives. The only "new" development with regard to tackle I can think of is the method feeder, which isn't new if you think about it.

The great thing about angling is it doesn't matter how old your gear is, the tried and tested methods and baits still work. There ain't no substitute for good technique and watercraft. A bad angler with all new gear and the latest tackle will still be outfished by a good thinking, adaptable one. I reckon if your old man was a decent angler 5 years ago, he will be one now - you don't forget.

Hi there,

I still use some fishing gear that i have had for over 25 years in some respects it is better than what is available now.

The main changes i feel are in the area of types of methods and bait this can all be pick up from the net and from reading.

At the end of the day the principles are the same, find the fish, find what they want to feed on and present the bait in the most natural way.

Do not be afraid to try what you already know and experiment with the new idea's.

I hope this helps.

Regards.

Most of the stuff that's changed in the last few years, is designed to catch anglers, not the fish.

I still use some tackle, and methods that I used 45 yrs ago, and I still catch.

I have never used a hair rig or pellet, but I still catch barbel. I have never used the 'Method', but although I try not to, I still catch carp.

On the whole, the fish themselves haven't changed. Some of the waters have, and the attitude and approach of some anglers have. But you can still catch plenty, (and enjoy yourself), by keeping it simple. (But that might not suit the tackle manufacturers, and 'celebs' that make their money from promoting 'new' ideas ;) ).

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John
