Cheers all.

I will be getting myself a licence later in the year but im a bit skint this month and will be spending 2 weeks in june bobbing around the coast of england and france in a small boat and will get my fishing fix then. So no need to get a licence as I can quite happily wait until July when the cash wont be a problem.

Good luck with teaching your daughter. I am sure it will be great fun and very rewarding.

... at the end of the day your not fishing.

Yes you are! At least you didn't say where you were planning to go

If in doubt give the EA a ring, but I don't think you'll get the answer you want :headhurt:

In reality you're unlikely to be checked, but a 1-day license is only £3.25. On their website the EA say:

'Money from the sale of licences helps to fund our work managing fisheries. If you are caught fishing without one, you are cheating other anglers and could be fined up to £2,500.'

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Look at it from the EA bailiff's point of view.

Anyone who has a kid with them whilst fishing could claim that they weren't fishing, the rod belongs to the kid, and 'all that I was doing was giving him/her a hand'.

Others have been done in the past for just holding a kid's rod, helping them get a fish in, trying to unsnag the line etc

If you intend handling the rod and tackle, it's far better to play safe and get a licence, or take the chance and not moan too loudly if you do get checked and nabbed.

To be honest im not going to pay 3.50 to spend half an hour fishing. Not when A: I will be getting a full licence later in the year which wont actualy run for a year anyway (another issue but one that winds me up). B: If you work it out you are paying £3.50 for roughly 7 pence worth licence time (based on one year).

So sod it im going to take my chances if the weather is nice enough. I hope that the little one will get the hang of it quickly and not want to let go anyway

Fair enough, but you asked whether you need a license or not! I hope the littlun has a good time and that you get pestered to go again soon (and that the weather's OK - looks like it's scuppered my weekend plans).

I suspect rain may stop play, which will also scupper the second plan of working in the garden with TMS on. With any luck i will be able to teach her when we go sailing and there wont be any licence issues

Clouseau: Does your minkey have a lisaunce?

Peddler: My minkey?

Clouseau: Yes, does your minkey have a lisaunce?

Peddler: A lisaunce?

Clouseau: Your minkey! Does he have a lisaunce!?

Peddler: Oh, does my monkey have a license?

Clouseau: That is what I have been saying the whole time you fool.

The monkey is an independent businessman. He does not tell me what to play, and I do not tell him what to do with his money.

My daughter wants to go fishing with me which is great. I plan to equip her with my 6 foot spinning rod and float and know a great spot on the canal with lots of small roach and rudd shoaling close to the near bank so no real casting needed. Thing is I havnt renewed my rod licence since it ran out in March as i simply havnt had time to fish. Now my daughter is 3 1/2 so i guess im going to be doing most of the actual rod handling as she will be far too exited first time out and i dont fancy hooks flying everywhere until she has got to grips with the basics. I know she can fish for free but do i need a licence to be in attendance and teaching?

Just buy a licence on line...it's not worth the fine and it cheats other anglers who have paid...

...or buy it from your local post office, you'll get it immediately plus you'll be helping support something that may be lost sometime in the future
