So if someone breaks into my home at night and I feel threatened, I can hit him over the head with something heavy and call the police to remove the remains from my house?

I know your gun laws are such that just shootin the varmit would cause me problems even if I had a proper license for the gun.

Newt, It is all about the perpetrators "human rights" If someone breaks into your house and you wake up and hit him with an ashtray to stop him nicking your P.C. or TV or whatever, you have infringed HIS "human rights", never mind the fact that he is in your house, nicking YOUR goods!

The fact that you used an ashtray (Is this why they want to stop smoking?) as a "weapon" you have "infringed HIS human rights"!!!

It has got nothing to do with the human rights act. You have always been limited to using 'reasonable force' whilst defending your home. In a nutshell Newt, if the intruder is unarmed you will be in trouble if you bash his brains in with a baseball bat, decapitate him with your katana or shoot him full of buckshot. If he is armed you can use an equivalent weapon.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Just a couple of facts:

You certainly can use a legal gun to defend yourself in your own house but not if the offender is running away from you i.e. she has ceased to be a threat.

Human Rights has nothing to do with it.

The law says nothing about 'if he is armed you can use an equivalent weapon' it is for the courts to decide whether or not you have used reasonable force. Daily Mail readers would probably be surprised to know that the courts are more often on their side than they realise.....of course there are always the exceptional cases like Tony Martin (who shot the intruders as they were trying to get away from him).

As many posters on this thread have already said we don't know all the facts in this case and I doubt we will find them in the Daily Mail.

No one in this country gets arrested without a legal reason. No one in this country is held in custody without a legal reason. No one in this country is held in custody without access to a lawyer. Everyone in this country can make a complaint to the IPCC.

I tell you what really p*sses me off..........its this anti Daily Mail thing! I wonder how many of the slaggers read the Sun or the Daily Star (I actually know one bloke personally who slags the Daily Mail who reads the Daily Star!!! Unsurprisingly he fails to see the irony! :headhurt: ).

There is some piffle written in ALL the papers, and some good stuff too.

The Daily Mail is particularly good at financial advice for the average bloke for example.

Some of you need to get over yourselves!

PS I don't buy a daily newspaper but read many of them online.

The Daily Mail is a terrible rag mate, but maybe not quite as bad as the Star. I cannot remember who it was, but I had a disagreement with another poster and when I asked him what the source for his statistics were he said he had read it in the Daily Star. I nearly choked on my hamster sandwich. Edited by corydoras

True, but less likely to find yourself in hot water if you do.
