Sorry

On thinking about it I suppose that I would need to download UBUNTU and that would be the ISO file.

Doing it now

The iso is the operating system. Get it from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Top download (14.04) surrounded by purple background, Select 64 or 32 bit from the drop down. If you have 2gb of ram in pc use 32 bit. If you have 4gb of ram exactly id still stick with 32 bit. If you have more than 4gb go with 64 bit. Hit download after choosing. An iso file will download. Select this iso usig the usb creator.

Its a big download (a few gb)

P.s. Once installed to the usb. You will probably need to set your bios to "boot from usb" in boot order

Or if when you start the computer you see the "press F2 for bios" for example sometimes you can see an option like "press F12 for boot options" and select the usb drive so no need for editig bios.

If all that went well ubuntu will start. Select the try ubuntu option not install!

OK, I have the ISO file downloaded and I am ready to load it on to the pen.

It says that it will overwrite the MBR on the pen. Is this a bad thing as I have files stored on the pen that I would not want to lose.

To the best of my knowledge there is no MBR already on the pen

thats right. Mbr is installed on the drive to turn it into a bootable usb drive. It will format the pen drive to do this so all data will be wiped.

To turn it back into an ordinary pen drive just reformat it through windows as ntfs or fat32.

I don't want to wipe the files that already on the pen so will have to leave it there until I get another pen to try it on.

Thanks Andy

argos do an 8gb for about 6 quid. Or you could try the live dvd option (disc instead of usb)

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Using the same iso you downloaded, skip to "burning the iso on to a dvd"

Andy

I now have more coasters than I did before but I don't seem any closer to being able to boot from UBUNTU

I will wait until I get a new USB pen and try that again.

I bit the bullet and ran the upgrade. The download took about 1 hour and the upgrade took about an hour. My personal programs still work, as does the wireless printer. Just got to get to grips with the new Edge browers, and then train the wife
