Also, the problem isn't that there aren't plenty of them where they do occur, it's that there aren't many waters containing them.

If they think there rare they should drop by 2 of my local fisheries. The one pool you can catch a crucian every other chuck. But the other is crucian heaven, i once went down fishing 1 section of pole to hand, fishing on and feeding corn and i had a crucian every drop in , in the end i had near 200 crucians in 4 hours and ended up with 37Lb of fish. All the fish are pure crucians and bread like hell and is chock a blocked with them. In the past they have had them to just over 3lb.

What makes it even more complicated is that even old books from the 1960s list two different types of crucian carp, one being the deeper, more hump backed, brassy variety and the more torpedo-shaped, olive variety that they referred to as "Prussian carp".
