I've found it. Its on page 28 of Walker's Pitch and the quote reads, "Chub 'come unscared' in about ten minutes to the pound!"

I thought it was twenty minutes too until I checked.

Ahh - thanks Owen - I was pretty sure it was 10mins...

Ah! So I WAS right about the origin, because Walkers Pitch is a collection of his Angling Times articles.

I thought it was twenty minutes too until I checked.

Yes, me too - I wonder if it WAS twenty minutes in the original (where I read it - I've never owned a copy of Walkers Pitch) - cos if you spooked a 4lb chub on the clear shallow waters of the Upper Great Ouse it certainly wouldn't be any good coming back after forty minutes.

...and as Leon confirms with his retrieved hook, the time is much less on deeper and more turbid water like the Medway.

Dunno if the boat proves anything though, Lower Medway chub are well used to boats. I always think boats upset anglers more than upsetting fish. In fact, just after a boat has churned through is a good time to expect a bite - the wash must stir the bottom up a bit and perhaps expose something noshable for the chub.

Caveat....That is provided boat traffic is reasonably common. If boats are rare, then yes, they will scare fish.

Thanks, Owen! "Walker's Pitch" is a book I've only ever once seen in a secondhand bookshop (in about 1982/3). It was £12, but had a stained cover, so I passed it by. Bad move! I've never seen one again, and the 5 copies currently offered via AbeBooks are priced £60 - £120!

I bought one of these plain reprints in 2003 for a perfectly reasonable price. However I sold it to another AN member after I read it!
