I find I have to agree with Tony. Britain is generally recognised as one of the most filthy and litter strewn countries in the world. A lot of it dumped/thrown out of car windows etc by "law abiding citizens" Out of sight, out of mind it would seem.

But it seems everone on AN is a good guy, none of us do it!

As Steve can testify, I live pretty much out in the sticks, but I still find litter in the front garden, mostly crisp and sweet bags.

So we have laws to try to curb this disgusting behaviour, and now and then someone falls foul of this law.

Woman with apple core...lady with household waste.....person dropping cigarette butt....all guilty of breaking the law.

In the case of the apple woman, "out of sight out of her car" has backfired

So why all this indignation?

" However, throwing away an apple core out of sight in some bushes where it will help the wildlife doesn't constitute littering in my book. Throwing an apple core away onto a pavement does."

but that is exactly where it was dropped

Tony, I apologise if I've missed something, but it seems to me that it wasn't on a pavement as to quote from the report it was "on land which did not have a waste management licence."

You obviously feel extremely strongly about this, but as I've already said our views are very close. I bet you didn't see any litter when you came to Wingham!

I suggest we agree to differ, albeit only slightly, and move onto other topics.

Well its hardly crime of the century is it? I loathe litter, you should see the Severn after a flood and see what those floating Gin Palaces jettison every weekend. But what is disturbing me is this smacks of a police state type of action, besides the apple is a natural food which will not harm the environment which is the issue behind this ridiculous waste of public money,

And quite rightly so. It's not "now and then" though, it's all too frequently!

However, I believe rather than prosecute one person who threw an apple core out of her window it would be preferable to prosecute a greater number who threw out litter such as packaging.

Could that in itself be one of the underlying problems??

Is there any need for the amount of packing that most products come wrapped in?

FWIW , i regularly litter , it keeps people in jobs , dosen't it?
