Standby button

With all the emphasis on saving money and protecting our planet going on at the moment , there is an advert currently on the gogglebox which really dosen't make much sense.

"Let's switch OFF our appliances and not leave them on standby".............WHAT?!?!?

What is the purpose of a standby button.............idleness nothing more.

Why not get into the manufacturers ribs and tell them to stop making the facility?

Isn't the point of standby that the appliance starts up quicker? I don't think there's much of a delay on modern devices, so maybe there's no need for it, but on the other hand I remember reading that manufacturers were really cutting down the standby power consumption so that it wouldn't be a real concern any more. Our LCD telly starts up more or less immediately, even from cold. The only thing that takes ages to startup is the betamax HD-DVD player which takes as long as a PC to boot up.

I understand that recent reports state that an appliance on "standby" still uses up to 80% of the power that it uses whilst switched on.

Having said that, my TV has no "Off" button on the set itself. "Off" on the remote just switches it onto "standby". The only way to switch the TV off is to disconnect the power by unplugging at the wall. On powering back up it has to go through a full station scan ... with all the problems that entails.

So I'm afraid mine stays on standby .....

My TV gets switched off, as I now have two kids who are so keen to switch it on and off for me, I never have to get off my lazy, fat backside :D

we have remote control sockets that switch every item off connected to them (it adds up ,tv ,vid ,dvd ,freeveiw and sat) another is on the pc's socket (and its full 10 socket extention) so i can turn it on from my bed or more importantly off after the monitors cooled down

great bits of kit.

some old bits of kit use a fair bit of juice on standby but recent legislation is bringing it right down on new items

I think hibernate simply saves the current system state to disk and shuts down. Certainly we can leave the laptop hibernated indefinitely. Sleep is different, though.
