Help : Medical Problem

Recommended Posts

I am sorting out my tablets for the week filling my morning and evening dose boxes.

I have been taken up till yesterday 5mg of Ramipril twice a day.

I have new 5mg tablet supply which I start today and it states:

"ONE to be taken BD - NEW DOSAGE"

No one told me it was changing but the wording states very clearly NEW DOSAGE so I take that as read, but what is "BD" ?

Can anyone advise, my local friendly nurse is away this weekend.

Would not normally worry but Ramipril is about the most important pill I take now.

I will recheck tomorrow with doctor.

Thanks for that link mate "BD" could be short for bedtime, as one of the first threads I read the chap had been told 100% to take at bed time.

I will see if I can find any further information.

Ken , could it be Before Dinner ?

Ken , actually i think i may have found something

On the following site is this little snippet

Q. What do QDS, TDS, BD and OD mean?

A. QDS is 4 times a day; TDS stands for 3 times a day; BD means twice a day and OD is once a day. These abbreviations are from Latin words. 6TD stands for 6 times a day.

This is the page - FAQ's

Not sure if its relevant though

Well I was taking them twice a day same dosage of tablet so that makes sense of the BD bit, plus I have 28 x 2 tablets one months supply, now it all adds up apart from using Latin abbreviations.

Thanks for your help ALL :D:D

Paul is correct, BD medicine is normally taken morning and evening.

They put the tablets in those white bags with the top stapled closed. Had no reason to open until today or so I thought :D

The writing on the boxes was highly misleading.

In the past it has clearly stated "twice a day" and having just checked all the other packets they use once, twice or three times per day.

So the "BD" plus the "NEW DOSAGE" was highly confusing and as these tablets have a bit of a reputation they are not to be messed with.

I will take it up with both the doctor and the pharmacist in a level headed manner, best not to upset those who are controlling your welfare. :D:lol:

Thanks again for all comments.

Regardless of what it means, it was very bad practice for the Rx to be changed without warning you and written that way without explaining it to you.

There are many of the abbreviations used by physicians when they are writing prescriptions but those are for instructing the chemist who hopefully is familiar with their meaning and not used for giving a patient directions for taking the medicine.

sig: 1 AC & HS would clearly say to a pharmacist in the States that the med was to be taken "1 tablet (or capsule) before each meal and at bedtime" but they should absolutely put those instructions in English on the label.
